Everybody can gripe about no backlight, cost of downloads, no browsing or whatever else you want to complain about! This is am amazing product and has changed my life dramatically. I used to carry around several books and publications in the hopes that when I got some free time, I could read. Now, I just carry my Kindle. I love it...fits in my pocketbook. And, I can get bestsellers when they are released for about the same price as the paperback, which I have to wait months or more for release. I use my public library and am always waitlisting the bestsellers because of their expense, waiting my turn to read them. Now, I can have them when they are released for the price of waiting for the paperback, just sooner...love it! The backlight doesn't bother me because I think it will change the 'face' of the Kindle...I like its readability like it is. My concern is that a backlight will change this. The Kindle screen looks like a book page. I will agree that the cover and 'holder' on the back of the machine could be improved...my solution? Just put a couple of tabs on the right of the cover and you're fine! Kindle went on vacation with me, used it in restaurants, hotel, beach, plane, everywhere...did not have to carry tons of reading material. KUDOS to Amazon for an A+++ product!
I thought long and hard before I decided to invest in my Kindle. It took
just one look around my home and all the stacks of books everywhere that
made me decide to buy it. So far I love it and it was really great on a
recent trip I took. The only thing I have found so far is that for me the cover was a big part when picking out a book to enjoy and sometimes I
feel like I am reading a "generic book" My son joking suggested to print
the cover from amazon.com and stick it on the inside cover of my Kindle.
I might just do that! I did have trouble with the Kindle falling out of
the cover put a couple of sticky Velco strips took care of that.
I bought the Kindle as a Birthday present for my wife, who is an avid reader of fiction novels. She has been using it nonstop since she got it! She loves being able to download samples, and then instantly buy the book if she likes it. Much more convenient than having to go browse the back covers in a store. They are a lot cheaper, too (although I can't say this has saved money because she is buying a LOT of books!!)
The device itself works flawlessly and is more convenient than reading a book. The only thing I wasn't thrilled with is that I had expected battery life to be a lot better. In practice it's not an issue since she reads in the house and keeps it plugged in a lot. But for travelling, you won't be able to go days without power. Despite this, I give it 5 stars because for the way we use it, it is perfect.
I am an avid book reader and the Kindle is a book lovers dream!!
It is so easy to use-so easy and fast to shop in the Kindle store and get books, magazines and newspapers- I am never without something to read-

Fantastic device with a few rough edges
I've owned my Kindle for about 6 months now and I can honestly say I'd hate to be without it. It's so simple to use I'm betting my wife could even figure it out (just kidding you whackos). I have to laugh at the reviews that say it doesn't do this and it doesn't do that as if every electronic device must exploit every opportunity in order to reach its full potential. That's just plain wrong. Amazon got it right when they decided Kindle would be about reading, and only about reading.
It's not perfect and many of the comments about the physical design are on the mark. I use it every day and I still press the forward and previous buttons inadvertantly at times. I suppose no matter what they did this might happen, but with the current design it's BOUND to happen, so improvement is definately possible. I would have gone 5 stars but for this minor irritation.
I love the fact I can take as many books as I want on vacation with me and only have to pack my Kindle to do it. I've sent documents I need to review to my Kindle and saved the hassle of dragging my PC out for every little thing. I don't have to back up my Kindle because Amazon does that for me. When I want to buy a book I can do so quickly and easily from practically anywhere (although I do miss my trips to the book store.)
If you read a lot you should definately own a Kindle.
