A Cult Classic that will always HAUNT!

I first saw this movie as a teenager at the theater. After the movie, as my boyfriend and I were walking though the parking lot back to his car and guy with a deep voice came up from behind me and shouted "Boyyyy!" in a deep voice just like Angus Scrimm. Well, I about peed myself.

This movie is great. Today my kids ejoy watching it and my son has a plaster mask of Angus Scrimm. Speaking of Angus Scrimm, he is a legend in his own right. The Tall Man will always have a place in my best nightmares.

Recently I was happy to learn that he is still alive and kicking! Perhaps they will make another sequel to Phantasm. I would love to see The Tall Man back in action, terrifying Michael, Jody, Reggie, and millions of other daring souls!

Watch this classic then run for your life!

Booooyyyyy this is a great horror film!

Jody and Mike are two brothers who find out that there's something strange with their local mortuary; the tall mortician lifts and puts a casket in a hearse by himself, hooded dwarves play hide and seek on the grounds, and a flying ball sucks the blood out of a poor man. With the help of their friend Reggie, they'll investigate the Tall Man's doings and what goes on behind close doors at the mortuary.

A chilling cult classic from Don Coscarelli (Beastmaster, Bubba Ho-Tep), Phantasm has everything a horror fan wants. The film has just the right atmosphere, tone, and creep factor. They sure don't make them like this anymore! Coscarelli has created such a memorable film and an eerie antagonist you won't soon forget in the Tall Man, played to perfection by Angus Scrimm. Michael Baldwin, who plays Mike, does a great job with his character and must've had a ball riding that motocross and running around with a shotgun. There's something for everyone in this fast paced flick; sex in graveyards, a car chase featuring a 1971 black Plymouth Barracuda (I want that car!), dwarves running around in dark basements, ice cream trucks, severed fingers oozing yellow blood, an appropriately sinister score, and an awesome climax. The only let-down you might find is with the twist ending; the first time I saw Phantasm, I was actually disappointed with its ending. But as time goes by, you get to appreciate it and it does fit the film.

The Anchor Bay DVD features the amazing original poster for its box cover; again, the kind of artwork for horror films that you don't see often these days. Included is a wonderful documentary that will take you back in time with the cast and crew, trailers and TV spots, home movies, interviews, and deleted scenes. Pick up a copy, boooyyyyy, you won't be disappointed!

YES YES FINALLY A CULT CLASSIC

Ok, I was 7 when I first saw this and it scared me. With those sphere's flying around and Mike having his hand caught in that box. There are so many memories attached to this film for me. I was glad to see that they FINALLY released Phantasm I and III but what about two and four. Or why not a box set. I do understand why two was not up. Not the same "Mike" as in the first one. But it is still part of the story. Glad that they did get Baldwin back though. The other guy was a bit weak and confused. All in all, this is one set I plan to get. Can't knock movies that were fun and scarey to watch. True fans know what I mean.

a horror classic

I think that Phantasm was a big surprise hit back in '79 for different reasons than why it has endured as a cult movie to this day.

Sure, the special effects haven't aged as well as some, but they were remarkable for a low-budget movie made only two years after Star Wars came out. At the time, Phantasm did not come across as a low budget movie at all and I think it shocked everybody. It's taken decades and many technical developments in SFX along the way to finally make this movie's technical limitations more glaringly obvious. At the time? There wasn't a 12-year old in the country who didn't think it was impressive.

Phantasm was bizarre enough and had enough shock moments to scare and thrill young viewers, and the killer silver balls were such a unique cinematic experience that nobody else has even tried to emulate them in a similar horror film.

But while Coscarelli was able to brilliantly evoke and convey his unique nightmare vision of the strange tall man, the mysterious silver balls, and grave-robbing interdimensional evil cloaked dwarves, what makes this film endure is what I believe is the human element.

As opposed to the shallow, vapid, teen slasher flicks to follow it, Phantasm's characters are allowed to develop into involving, three dimensional people. I believe that is what gives this movie some legs, and what has allowed for relevant Phantasm sequels (ii- iv). There is a unique, profound sadness in Mike Pearson's compulsive need to follow his big brother around after the deaths of both of their parents. And in the end, there is an even deeper sadness when the audience realizes that his big brother Jody has been dead all along as well. The characters are allowed to show and feel emotional depth-- sorrow, fear, anger, frustration. They aren't cardboard props to be slashed by the villain. They're intrepid, resourceful, and you can't help but like them and relate to them... especially when they're just sittin' on the porch strummin' the guitar and singing some tunes.

Phantasm's surrealness is only reinforced when it is made the backdrop of such normal human characters and behavior. Otherwise, cloaked dark dwarves and flying silver balls would seem quite random and stupid if put in the context of your typical teen slasher flick (another sorority/campfire bimbofest, anyone?). This is where most of the low-budget cookie-cutter horror films fail nowadays.
