Best budgeting system out there!

This is absolutely the best budgeting software out there, and the reason lies in the 4 rules of cash flow it is based on. If you want to stop living paycheck to paycheck and really get a handle on your day to day finances, this is the program for you. You will finally see where your money is going and learn to live within your means. It comes with free upgrades and amazing customer support.

Be sure and read the setup guide and visit the support forums at youneedabudget.com

I can't believe what this has done for my finances and peace of mind. Highly recommended!!!

Maybe I'm not the one you want to ask...

Honestly, I haven't tried the other ones that are available, so I don't know how this one compares. It seems fairly user friendly. I'm just bitter because the day after I spent a few hours identifying each bank transaction I had so that the software could organize my expenditures, I found out my bank does all this for free with online banking enrollment. However, I haven't tried that yet either. Good luck.

Budeting for Us Dummies

In the good ole days (when I was younger), you wrote a check and automatically subtracted it from what you had on the spot, and waited for your monthly statement in the mail. Now with ATMs, etc, you loose track, spend more than you make, you just loose track quickly of where your money isn`t going. What YNAB does is take you back to the tried and true method. Meaning you write down everything you buy, everything, gas for the car, cleaning supplies, etc. Yeah, you can do it yourself, maybe if your really good with Excel or Open Office you could build something like this. I'm computer impaired when it comes to doing that. What has it done for me?

You can download your checking statements in Quicken format, and it pulls in all the updates, categories them (food, gas), and does the math.

I was floored I wasted $260 at the gas station alone on junk, not gas. I got that total down to $150, and still got all my beer and smokes, yeah. Last week we spent $174 on groceries, this week, $68 (we checked what we had in the cupboards/fridge this time before going), saved $100.

At the end of the month I expect to have an additional $500 left over, ear marked for a slush fund, and paying for medicines and such. Also, I set aside mad money for my wife to use on herself, not me, or clothes, hygiene, just on stuff of $150.

I'm old, so it was confusing at first to figure out the program, but it works. Bottom line, you won't make anymore money per payday, but you won't waste your money, and still "have it all," plus allot more left over. You won't be reaching for that credit card as often to bail you out of a heavy month where the car insurance payment from hell comes in, or medical insurance quarterly bill.

To me, it's worth the $40, chow.

Just what the doctor ordered

You ever get the sense of helpless fatalism as you feel your household finances spiralling out of control? And when you try valiantly to communicate it with your blissfully unconcerned spouse, he/she makes some ridiculously unobtainable budget goal (from now on we'll live on half your salary and save the rest!) and then doesn't change any of her spending habits to achieve this?

Well, this software will be just what the doctor ordered.

I originally bought Microsoft Money (because that was the only thing the local shop carried). I spent the first 2 days starting and restarting and re-restarting my budget because I couldn't make heads or tails of it. Even the simplest things took forever, and even then was only achieved by Herculean effort. I eventually gave up and discovered YNAB Pro on this site and was instantly struck by the near unanimous ovation given by its users. So I gave it a go.

This package is delightfully user friendly. Even without a 'Dummy series guide' (like you need if you want to use Money, because its included manual is so inadequate) or even reading the included manual, I was able to quickly set up a budget - it was all so intuitive and common sensical. Really a breath of fresh air.

Filling in entries is a breeze (as it should be), setting up budgets is a breeze, setting up master and sub categories for expenditures is a breeze, and it has a very helpful feature to handle 1) reimbursements, for example, where you might pay x dollars for a doctor's fee but later get y dollars back on medical insurance, and 2) split bills, where you might have spent x dollars, but not all for the same category. Helpful little things like this shows the programmer really thought this through, while at the same time keeping the whole package as simple as possible.

The only reason I am not giving it 5/5 is the limited range of reports you can currently create.

But I understand this product is continuously being updated (and future updates are free), so this might not be a problem for long.
