Single Best MPA Book
This was the single best book of all the books I was required to read for my Masters in Public Administration, and it remains a valued reference in my rather large personal library.
Other books I recommend:
Normal Accidents: Living with High-Risk Technologies
Radical Man: The Process of Psycho-Social Development.
The Innovator's Dilemma: The Revolutionary Book that Will Change the Way You Do Business (Collins Business Essentials)
Group Genius: The Creative Power of Collaboration
Leadership and the New Science: Discovering Order in a Chaotic World
The Knowledge Executive
The Wealth of Networks: How Social Production Transforms Markets and Freedom

Morgan Images of Organization
great metaphors from author to help understand
organization
al thinking but read slowly if you are a concrete thinker. Easy reading really if you think metaphorically. Had to write a paper on psychic prisons, uncanny how true Morgan's analogy is to real workplace environment. This book was better than our required text. Hated the Organizational Behavior instructor I had but loved the book and the subject matter.
Thought Provoking Textbook
The book is not an entry level textbook and does not waste any time getting to the points. It challenges you to think differently about the forces that influence today's
organization
s and managers. Using metaphors to explain concepts and practices it is easy to understand the material and apply it to any organization, manager, or employee. I did not give the book five stars because it was published in 1998 and so much has changed due to the internet.

Pedagogy of the Oppressed
Somewhat difficult to read, but the author knew what he was writing as he experienced freedom from oppression. Although it was written in 1970 as experienced in a South American country, it portrays universal truths which apply to experiences in twenty-first century USA.
Since its first publication over twenty years ago,

has become a classic in the canon of management literature. The book is based on a very simple premise-that all theories of organization and management are based on implicit images or metaphors that stretch our imagination in a way that can create powerful insights, but at the risk of distortion. Gareth Morgan provides a rich and comprehensive resource for exploring the complexity of modern organizations internationally, translating leading-edge theory into leading-edge practice.
