Friend said it was helpful

I try to stay on the "right" side of the law! But I have a friend who has had his share of troubles. I got the book for him and he says it has helped. He now has a basic knowledge of what to expect when it comes to criminal proceedings and he can actually ask his lawyer some intelligent questions! However, if you are guilty... I don't know if this book will help out much! LOL!

Awsome..

I just wanted to say that this book is great, awsome.I had checked it out several times at my local library, then I decided to buy it due to all the wonderfull and helpfull information. It goes beyond technical description, breaks it down to be eaisly digestable. Thank you for a wonderfull book,I would highly recommend this book to family or friends.
Not only for law students, anyone who is interested in how the system works.
Thank you. Sincerly, Tina

Excellent

This book is very readable for the layperson. The layout is quite effortless to navigate. It is very well cross-referenced and makes frequent references to the relevant sections of state and federal laws. The writing style is quite readable. In other words - English.
All the legal terms that are introduced are carefully explained, and facsimiles of the various legal documents, such as search and arrest warrants, are included at the end of each chapter.

In addition to all the question and answers, just about every page is filled with tips, guides to more information i.e: (The Questionable Legality of Loitering Laws gives: "... the safest place to challenge the validity of loitering laws is in the courts, not on the streets to "a police officer's face". There are loads of appropriate case examples.

In the end, if I got arrested, I'd still hire a lawyer. But every question you ask a lawyer costs money, as they get paid by the hour. This book would prove priceless in having an understanding of what's going to happen. Saving things you still don't understand and items related directly to you for the lawyer.

A Mega FAQ

As something of a frustrated lawyer, I really enjoy reading about the law and Nolo's excellent book, the 11th edition of the Criminal Law Handbook is a great addition to my library (the other really good one I like is titled `Represent Yourself in Court').

The book itself is indicative of the high quality the publisher is known for: the binding is firm, the print is clear and easily readable and the layout is quite effortless to navigate. The pages also lay out flat, a nice feature for manageable table-top reading.

As befits a weighty topic like Criminal Law, this work comes in at a healthy 678 pages. Straight off, the authors (one a professor of law at UCLA, the other a practicing attorney) point out that their goal is to present the information in plain English however the book is not a substitute for personalized advice from a knowledgeable lawyer. All well and good, and for the most part I agree with this advice--but understanding the basics of the vast number of criminal laws on the books can only stand you in good stead, even if you're not planning on breaking any of them!

For example, your day-to-day interaction with that arm of government (the Police) which possesses the ability to take one's very freedom away can definitely be positively informed by understanding the law. This book does an excellent job of providing that understanding. The extensive table of contents starts with this very topic: `Talking to the Police,' goes on through `Search and Seizure,' getting arrested, bail and of course, the Matlock in all of us will be particularly pleased: the process of arraignment and trial. It doesn't stop quite there, but covers Sentencing, Appeals, Juvenile Courts and Procedures and for those unlucky enough, Prisoner's Rules. Rounding out the book is a section on researching the law. The vast amount of information one needs at their fingertips is possibly why lawyers make the money they do, in my rather untutored opinion.

As the authors point out, "the criminal justice system belongs to you. You have a right to know how it works. The information in this book tells you what you never learned in high school civics." The way they have chosen to present this information is superb: in a gigantic FAQ. All the common questions about the chapter topic (for example, `Talking to the Police') are laid out for quick perusal so much so that the readability is just astounding. I quickly found myself covering vast amounts of information very quickly because the answers to the posed questions are formulated in a easy, conversational manner. Very nice.

In addition to all the question and answers, just about every page is filled with tips, guides to more information (The Questionable Legality of Loitering Laws gives: "... the safest place to challenge the validity of loitering laws is in the courts, not on the streets to a police officer's face") and loads of appropriate case examples. As if that weren't enough, examples of legal forms are everywhere as well as resource lists of books and websites.

At the least, this is a great book to have on hand whether or not you ever find yourself in the proverbial tight spot. Five, well-deserved stars.

Criminal law rules and procedures, explained in plain English.

The criminal justice system becomes increasingly complex each year as new laws and decisions can change legal standards dramatically. And at a time when even law enforcement is being affected by hiring freezes and budget cuts, the result is fewer resources and public programs for those accused of crimes, and their friends and families. That's why it's crucial that you have access to clear and complete explanations of all aspects of criminal law and procedure.

The Criminal Law Handbook answers your questions about every part of a criminal case, from cops to crooks. Find out everything you've ever wanted to know about how the system works, and the how and why police, lawyers and judges doing what they do. It covers:

arrests
booking
preliminary hearings
charges
bail
courts
arraignment
search and seizure
defenses
evidence
trials
plea bargains
sentencing
juveniles, and
"crimespeak," the language commonly used in criminal statutes.

The revised 11th edition covers all new Supreme Court rulings, as well as completely updated, meticulously researched changes to case law and new information on domestic violence law. (20080210)
