Secrets of The Tudor Court-The Pleasure Palace by Kate Emerson

How is it a child not of nobility ends up in the protective care of King Henry VII being raised at court and lady service to princess Mary and princess Margaret? What secrets will be revealed about her Mother and Father and their relationship to the death of the French monarch? Will Jane Popyncourt forsake true love for finding out the truth?

I loved reading The Pleasure Palace for the somewhat historical truths alone, and the story in fact was intriguing. Based on an actual persons in the court of Henry VIII, you'll love reading this tale as much as I did, I'm sure. A great read for sitting in the shade of a cool porch on a summers day. Bring a cool drink with you to calm those moments of passion reading.

Very Enjoyable

If you are a history buff, particularly enamored of the Tudors as I am, this book will bring that era alive for you. Great books containing Henry VII are hard to find as most authors chose to focus solely on Henry VIII, which is another reason I enjoyed this book. The author captured the essence of Margaret and Mary Tudor perfectly...and I found I couldn't put the book down.

note: any discrepencies or liberties with history, the author clearly points out as well as her reasoning. So refreshing after reading so many novels with incorrect facts!

Delightful Tudor novel

Like many historicals, Secrets of the Tudor Court: The Pleasure Palace presents the decadent, intriguing court of Henry VIII through the eyes of a minor but true-to-life figure of the day, in this case Jane Popyncourt. She was taken to the royal court of Henry VII by her mother when she was a young girl and Jane is eventually sent to the nursery to speak French with the young royals there. Growing up in the Tudor Court, she quickly becomes involved in many scandals and mysteries of the day.

So the plotline is pretty standard for a Tudor novel, but this book is still a very engaging read. The writing style is what makes it so above all else. There are many historical details, but neither these nor the descriptions ever feel cloying or a showcase to let the reader know how much research the author did. The whole story flowed really well and kept me flipping the pages quickly.

The characters themselves were interesting, as they usually are in these types of books. I really found myself liking Jane, from the time she was a child and even when she became a married duke's mistress, she remained a compelling character and her insightful ways gave great perspective into the times she lived in. There was also a mystery and though it felt a little silly and unlikely overall, I still enjoyed it and it even managed to surprise me. A very small romantic element comes into play, but I would say this remains firmly in the historical fiction category.

So this book worked for me. For a historical purist, maybe not. For anyone wanting a light, fun look at Tudor times, however, this one would be a good choice.

Loved it! If your a history nut read it!

I started reading this book last week and could not put it down! It was that good! Jane was a real person back in the Tudor era, and that is what made the history come to life for me is that she was an actual person. Overall this was a very enjoyable book, and if you are like me and read everything about the Tudors that you can get your hands on you will like this one!

Lukewarm read for me, but willing to read the sequel.

I have enjoyed reading this book enough to read the sequel, but I'd only give it 3 stars. It's a fun summer historical fiction kind of read, but not brilliant. That said, it's not a waste of time, either. Being under 400 pages, it's a small time investment, and worlds away from present day. I'm willing to give Emerson the benefit of a doubt and read the next book in the series. After that, will I keep going? We'll see. Definitely not a given.

Beautiful. Seductive. Innocent. Jane Popyncourt was brought to the court as a child to be ward of the king and a companion to his daughters -- the princesses Margaret and Mary. With no money of her own, Jane could not hope for a powerful marriage, or perhaps even marriage at all. But as she grows into a lovely young woman, she still receives flattering attention from the virile young men flocking to serve the handsome new king, Henry VIII, who has recently married Catherine of Aragon. Then a dashing French prisoner of war, cousin to the king of France, is brought to London, and Jane finds she cannot help giving some of her heart -- and more -- to a man she can never marry. But the Tudor court is filled with dangers as well as seductions, and there are mysteries surrounding Jane's birth that have made her deadly enemies. Can she cultivate her beauty and her amorous wiles to guide her along a perilous path and bring her at last to happiness?

Basing her gripping tale on the life of the real Jane Popyncourt, gifted author Kate Emerson brings the Tudor monarchs, their family, and their courtiers to brilliant life in this vibrant new novel.
