Awesome Read
As unapologetic as Mr. Paulson this
book
, and it's introduction, send you stumbling into a wonderful and disturbing story about a small town and
zombie
s with a swift kick to the hind-end. Through rich character development and the suspense building detail I found myself reading it all in one sitting. I have a total appreciation for this writer because
Lakewood
Memorial
is not as touch and go as most zombie novels tend to be. Each character and their inner and exterior antagonists are very memorable and the visuals embed like a scalpel into an eyeball. My only regret is reading this book before the next installment is available, looking forward to them regardless.

The Big Giant Head Can WRITE!!!!
Lakewood
Memorial
is a fast and enjoyable read. I gobbled it up in just a few hours and had a great time doing so. Robert R. Best may be my sworn enemy (we're both
zombie
genre writers and love to tease each other), but the man with the big head wrote a story with a big heart. I found myself rooting for both our lead and her two kids.
The plot is simple. Zombie outbreak occurs. Nurse on duty at the hospital ends up in a whole lot of trouble. Nurse's kids are home with the babysitter and end up in a whole lot of trouble. The rest of the
book
is all about the family trying to reunite while fighting off zombies and dealing with some truly horrifying deaths.
The zombies in this novel are persistent and terrifying. They also appear to be EVERYWHERE. But considering these zombies crawled out of their graves and began making more of the undead, this makes sense even though the outbreak has just happened.
The action is swift, the gore icky, and the characters likable.
My only gripe (and I said this to his face at the Horror Realm convention) was that I felt the book ended on a cliffhanger. This surprised him. He felt he had resolved his main storyline, but I disagreed. Strongly.
I want the sequel NOW.
I need to know what happened NOW.
Robert R. Best better be writing the sequel or I am gonna smack his big ol' head the next time I see him.
Though it pains me to admit it, my archenemy has written a very good book.
P.S. This review is actually a 4.5.

Pretty standard fare
This
book
isn't bad, but it is pretty standard fare as far as
zombie
stories go. I read it in a day, it is entertaining, but there is nothing really new or intriguing about the story.

Not time for a rest while reading Best
Mr. Best's '
Lakewood
Memorial
' is a sprint for your life tale of people trapped in a hospital and nearby suburb that are being overrun by the dead. The relentless, fast pace of this
book
is perfect for the near hopeless situation. I'm waiting for the sequel.
Zombie tale that grabs you by the throat and does not let go
Lakewood
Memorial
weighs in at a very efficient 150 pages with the promise for two sequels. The author moves the reader quickly into the story, providing us with virtually no "filler" before the undead rise and start tearing up the living. We get two stories that parallel one another, with Angie, a Nurse's Aid, stuck in the Hospital as the dead rise, and her kids, sitting at home with their baby sitter, as things also start to fall apart around town as well. They are all just trying to stay alive long enough to reunite as the
zombie
s do their best to tear them apart at every turn. These undead are not what we get these days which typically consist of you needing to get bit to get the virus that brings you back to un-life. Lakewood Memorial zombies are the undead that rise up regardless of whether they are bit or not, which means you have the added bonus of the dead long buried also crawling from their graves to maul the living.
Angie is joined by by several others in the hospital in her efforts to figure out how the hell to get out of the death trap of a place, most notably, Park, a bitter man whose friend was bitten who he has taken to the emergency room. Park was planning on eating a bullet before the apocalypse started but now it seems his planned suicide has to take a back seat to the rest of the world dying first.
You might think that there wouldn't be much room in such a short
book
for much character development (we are shuttled from scene to seen at a very rapid, in your face pace) but the author does manage to provide us with some personal insights into the characters and what they are feeling and thinking and why they do what they do. Park, in particular, seems to grow slightly less bitter as things start to look worse and worse. It will be interesting to see how the sequel is handled, given that the title seems to hint that it will be taking place at another hospital, though I find it interesting that hospitals and graveyards often have the moniker "Memorial" attached to them, which seems a rather nice tie in...perhaps the next one will be at a graveyard, instead.
If you your zombie story lean, mean, in your face (until it rips it off), then Lakewood Memorial is a great book to add to your collection.

The small town of
Lakewood
has been overrun by the walking dead. In a single night, the world has descended into a madness of biting teeth and a sickness that kills but does not kill. Caught at the center of it is Angie Land, young single mother and nurse's aide at Lakewood
Memorial
Hospital. She and a handful of others are lucky enough to survive the initial assault, but how long will they last? And more importantly to Angie, how long will her kids - waiting at home - survive?
