Taints and Walker's and Ravens Oh my!

StoneHeart is a wonderful book, once you get past the beginning. I, against my own preaching, normally pick books up by the cover art then look at the jackets. StoneHeart caught my attention about 8 months ago and from the backing it looked like my kind of book. A kid interacting with the statues of London that sounds a little strange, but cool. What strikes the danger chord even more for George is that, 1: he might have actually caused the on going fighting between the good and evil statues of London to flare in to a war. 2: No mortal person like you and me can see what's going on, he's alone except for the Gunner(a WW1 veteran off a war Memorial) and a feisty girl named Eddy. 3: he has caught the attention of the Walker (I'm not telling you any more read the book if you want to find out.) The book was a little choppy in the beginning but as you work on it gets a bit clearer but other than that it is 100% recommended by me!

Original

When 12 year old George takes out his anger on a stone carving, strange things start to happen. Suddenly, things that should not be moving at all begin to chase him around London. And to his horror, George seems to be the only one who can see them. He finally finds an ally when a statue steps down to help him, but his journey is only just beginning. Without any clue as to what's going on, George is thrust into a world where nothing is as it seems and is forced to fight against time in order to get his life back to normal.

The concept behind Stoneheart is one of the more original fantasy premises I've come across. Unfortunately the delivery doesn't quite live up to the concept. Not that it's a bad book by any means, it's just a little... flat. As previously stated, the premise is fantastic, but while the characters are all quite original and likable, they're not very layered. There's plenty of action in Stoneheart, which helps keep the reader engaged, but a little too much of the action involves running away from things, which eventually loses its intensity. For the most part I enjoyed the book, but found it dragged a bit at times.

For fans of the fantasy genre who've grown tired of vampires and wizards, Stoneheart provides a fresh new concept that will impress. For those who prefer characterization over concept, Stoneheart may be a bit of a letdown.

It is okay.

I am an older reader but also sometimes read books such as this on and Percy jackson. This isn't as good as the Jackson books but is ok. I will probably not read the other 2 but this one held my attention and had some good moments.

Stronger language than is suitable for the age aimed at.

I picked this up for my 13 yr old niece. After reading it I will hold off letting her read it due to the authors use of some inappropriate language for that age group. The book is well written and has an interesting plot though it can drag in some spots. I did read the entire series and the language for me anyway) is a problem in all 3 books. Though the story line is aimed at the reading level age 4-8 the use of some adult language makes it something I could not recommend to a parent of a child under 16yrs.

The new "Harry Potter" - but alas - only three books

I couldn't put this series down - just like the Harry Potter books. Although completely different...these books really pull you in. I `read' it via audio books (performed by the fantastic Jim Dale - who also read the HP books) and it was fabulous! I've read the other reviews and completely agree with the 5-stars reviews so I will not repeat those reviews..

I was so pleasantly surprised by this series of books:

The Stoneheart Trilogy:
* Stoneheart (2006)
* Ironhand (2007)
* Silvertongue (2008)

It's nothing like Neil Gaiman (as another reviewer wrote) but it is a darker book than most others (more like the last few last Harry Potter books). The book moves very fast with the story covering about three days of the character's lives. It's also fun because the statues that are in the book exist in London...so it would be a fun time for kids who can travel there or live there to see them and learn about history and art.

I highly recommend this series for readers of all ages.

A city has many lives and layers.  London has more than most.  Not all the layers are underground, and not all the lives belong to the living.

Twelve-year-old George Chapman is about to find this out the hard way. When, in a tiny act of rebellion, George breaks the head from a stone dragon outside the Natural History Museum, he awakes an ancient power. This power has been dormant for centuries but the results are instant and terrifying: A stone Pterodactyl unpeels from the wall and starts chasing George.  He runs for his life but it seems that no one can see what he?s running from.  No one, except Edie, who is also trapped in this strange world.

And this is just the beginning as the statues of London awake?

This is a story of statues coming to life; of a struggle between those with souls and those without; of how one boy who has been emotionally abandoned manages to find hope.
