Couldn't put this one down.
Loved this book from the moment I read the synopsis. I had no idea that there were any slaves that were NOT african-american, and I found it interesting that Lavinia being a white slave, rather than a black slave, got somewhat better treatment.
Some other reviewers did not like the writing style of describing the same event/scent from the perspective of different characters, but that was one of the things I loved most about the book.
I am looking forward to other books from Kathleen Grissom.
good but not great
The plot was good enough to keep me reading even though I didn't find it totally believable.

a great story, hard to put down
I rarely give a 5 star review but feel I can after reading this book. Sometimes a book of this length can tend to drag through parts but I didnt feel that with this story. Every page was making me want more. Love this story. Love the characters.
This stunning debut
novel
set in the antebellum South, is a tragic story of page-turning suspense, exploring the meaning of family, where love and loyalty prevail.
Orphaned while onboard a ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavinia arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the

. Under the care of Belle, the master's illegitimate daughter, Lavinia deeply bonds with her adopted family, though she is set apart from them by her white skin. Eventually, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house and she finds herself perilously straddling two very different worlds. When she is forced to make a choice, loyalties are brought into question, dangerous truths are laid bare, and lives are put at risk.
