A great piece of nostalga

I already owned a copy of this book, received it as a Christmas present last year. I started reading it and couldn't put it down ! Fantastic. I am ex Navy and could understand why it was originally written. To the reader some parts of the book appear to be boring regulations, however, during the war when these parts were originally written it would have proved to be invaluable information, and all in one publication, to a young inexperienced Officer. Some parts moved me to smile as it was obviously written by some "silver spooner" who really had no idea of leading men - reminiscent of those "Upper Crust" Officers of pre-WW11 vintage who purchased their commissions and really made a bun fight of anything they tried to organise.

I showed it to two other ex Navy types, both were Admirals in fact, one a Rear Admiral and the other a Vice Admiral, the other day and they too wanted a copy. So that was my reason for the purchase of the recent two copies. They are now in receipt of the books and are very pleased indeed.

Royal Navy Officer's Pocket Book

While the contents of this book were written in 1943/44 they are still very relevant to any Naval office of today, especially the guidance to Commanding Officers in the discharge of their duties. Times may have changed but these lessons, written in the time of major conflict which at that time was still in the balance, are just as pertinent today as they were in 1944.

Highly recommended. I have bought six copies and given them to friends who I know will treasure them.

Much better than the modern USN Officer's Guide.

Even though this book is 60+ yrs old, it is far superior to The Naval Officer's Guide Eleventh Edition when it comes to leadership and how to relate to your sailors. While obviously the document references are worthless to the modern officer, the chapters themselves are fantastic. A must read for any URL officer serving today!

Every naval officer, regular or reserve, active or retired, should own a copy of this book. Its guidance and advice to officers is as relevant as when this pocket-book was issued 65 years ago. Of special note for all in the naval service is this: "Never forget that the Ratings have few rights; but they definitely have got a right to good officers". This book is an excellent gift for any naval officer or any who are interested in naval history. I cannot commend it too highly. GAFC

This handbook, created to provide naval officers in World War II with advice and instruction on all aspects of their job, captures the benevolent language of the day, when authority was respected.  It features an Officer?s Aide Memoire, with notes from officer training school; information for medical officers treating battle casualties afloat; counsel for captains taking command of their first ship; and guidance on handling ships and dealing with disobedience and mutiny. Historian Brian Lavery provides an introduction and commentary throughout.
