Just Terrrific!

I bought this software about a month ago and I have been having a great time with it. It has thousands of problems to solve--and that's what chess is: perpetual problem solving. This CD-ROM has way more problems than any book, and the price is a real bargain. Most of the problems are purely practical, which is what you need if you want to improve your over-the-board skills.

Another great thing about it is the rating system seems very fair and accurate, something people often complain about in those "What's the Best Move" books.

The problems range from very easy to very difficult, so the student is unlikely to get discouraged over getting stuck on too many ultrahard problems; nor is the 2100-2400 player going to get bored from solving too many easy ones.

It's a bit hard to get started with TCT; it helps to read the little pamphlet that's included. Now that I have more experience with it, I have changed my review text and also the number of stars from a "4-4" to a "5-5."

Or at least I am TRYING to change the number of stars to 5s.

One part of the program is a large set of chess problems. You can put the problems in order of difficulty. I'm not sure how many problems there are, but I'd guess a thousand.

As you work the problems, the program adjusts your estimated "chess rating" up or down. I have never had a rating, so I guessed 1500 to start. As I solved problems, my rating gradually climbed to 1998. It has since fallen - which is a bit humbling, but I think I am going to learn a lot.

I have not yet looked at the other parts of Total Chess Training. There is a LOT of material there.

are you stuck and want to improve

There are times when you get stuck on a rating plateau, and you need to work out kinks in your game to raise that rating this software will help you do just that especially if you do not have a higher rated player as a friend or a coach to help you. They are in varing themes pins forks remove the guard. for the tactics part and they rest of it is just as good usually I can see the first move right off it is following up on it this is where this has helped my game. It makes you think, also when you think just remeber the old chess saying "sit on your hands before you make that move"
