I actually worked on this volume

This is a catalog of the exhibition held through the end of November 2003 at the University of Michigan Museum of Art called "Romanovs Collect: European Art from the Hermitage." The exhibition features objects of art collected by the Romanovs. The goal of the exhibition and this catalog is to demonstrate the collecting practices of the Romanovs and to show through art their personalities.

The major part of the show is dedicated to Catherine the Great and her acquisitions. Also, the works collected by Peter the Great, Elizabeth I, Paul I, Alexander I, Nicholas I, Alexander II and Nicholas II are well represented. There is a variety of objects shown in the exhibition: paintings, sculptures, decorative art, cameos, drawings, etc.

Both art historians and Russophiles will find this catalog engaging. This volume is also of interest to a casual art lover who may be intrigued by the tastes and whims of the Russian royalty.
