The Mandala of Being

This is the the best book I've read in a long time. I really enjoyed "A New Earth" by E.Tolle, it was the one Oprah did the series of shows with Spring of '08. This (to me) is the next step forward.

The Mandala of Being: Discovering the Power of Awareness

The Mandala of Being: Discovering the Power of Awareness

Lessons in life have an intelligent flow, synthesizing a free, non-structured curriculum of spiritual 'electives' designed to bring wisdom to the soul through choices we perceive, decisions we make, and actions we take, one moment at a time.

Conventional thinking nurtures the ego by defining and delineating whole experiences into fragments, which may suit the ego's desire to objectify, but works against the soul's need to integrate, clouding one's panoramic view over life's grand scheme and purpose. Too much fragmentation disrupts awareness, which interrupts our state of being -- well-being to be more specific.

Through "The Mandala of Being" Richard Moss MD gently reorients readers to life's true flow, so we are no longer afraid to see the "all-there-is," even from humans' finite perspective.

Awsome book

Dr Moss gives the most clear articulation of why we get stuck spiritually and psychologicaly that I have found (and I have looked for many years). He puts into words what I have long thought but never been able to shape into words. It is a life changing book at the top of the new thinking on the evolution of of human consciousness and spiritually. Thank you Dr. Moss My followup un this book is to attend one of his workshops. Thank you Dr. Moss.

True Self Awareness Can Change Our Lives Permanently!

Richard Moss' The Mandala of Being: Discovering the Power of Awareness is highly personal. From its very first pages, it spoke directly to me, encouraging me to try his method of self-empowerment.
He spoke of the golden rule: treat others as I'd like treated. But so often I am not successful. Why? Moss' answer is intriguing. Unless I perceive my inner being as wholesome, loved, and sufficient unto itself, I'm at a loss to encounter others in a positive, spontaneous and authentic way. When I hurt, I can hurt other people. There is a real message here for today's troubled world.

Moss would have me find my innermost self, here and Now, by quiet self-reflection, beginning with concentrating on the regularity of my own breathing. I feel the air as it enters my nostrils and leaves, slightly warmed by its interaction with my lung tissue. If I point a finger outward, I become aware of what I see: a wall, a pet, a doorway, a book I'm reading. Then I curl that finger to point directly at myself to answer what/who I see?

It is my own clothed body. But at once, it is more than that, it is me. I reside within as a living conscious being. But I reach a point, almost sacred, beyond which I cannot reflect. Here, I have become aware of consciousness but incapable of understanding it. It simply is, and I am one with it - I exist, now. I am Now.

Acquainted with my innermost self, Moss would guide me with his mandala, or circle of being. With practice, it can help me see that I am the thinking center beneath the layers of fear, hope, love, jealousy, guilt, prejudice, sorrow, regret - a myriad of baggage that I carry with me when reacting to other people. Is it any wonder I don't always understand them when I cannot see clearly, my own soul, my own consciousness?

The mandala is a large drawn circle with me at its focal point, concentrating on the stillness, the love, and the presence of my own me/Now. From this axis, I can step to different sections of the circle's circumference to question negative stories and feelings from the past I rely on to berate my being. I question, but I always return to the mandala's center to affirm myself. Reassured, I reach out around the circle touching others with new found dignity, compassion, and empathy.

The concepts in The Mandala of Being could be easily understood by the average reader. To read the book without the leisure and willingness to perform the activities Doctor Moss suggests is a waste of time. The pages of his book cannot tell any reader what her/his innermost being is. That conscious me/Now must be awakened by following Moss' suggested soul-searching method, sometimes with book in hand.

I would recommend The Mandala of Being to anyone who experiences a gnawing emptiness or meaninglessness in their lives whether it be short-lived or a malaise lasting a long time. Its reflective methodology can provide insightful self-awareness and the courage to look forward to a unique future with trust and self confidence.

outstanding transformational model and practices

This is a fantastic book. I will try to give a short summary with regards to its contents, value, author bio and writing style.

Contents: The "Mandala of Being" is, to my understanding, a model of the ego and its structure. The model schematically illuminates all the places we can put our attention and awareness. This in itself is a great accomplishment. The genius of this book, however, is that it also shows the experiential and emotional consequences of having our attention/awareness turned to one direction versus another. It becomes obvious that the emotions we seek and the emotions we flee are all possible only within particular contexts of awareness/attention. I personally believe these insights are of such novelty and significance that, were there a Nobel Prize for this type of writing, the Mandala of Being would be worthy of such recognition. The Mandala model is simple in appearance, simple to recognize and to begin to explore, yet it has tremendous depth and breadth in its ability to yield perspective and insights.

Value: So -- why would someone want to learn about the structure of the ego as it relates to subjective experience? When the ego, its desires and its habitual behaviors are unconscious, the ego runs our lives and we are stuck in reactivity. When the ego, its desires and behaviors are rendered conscious, then it no longer has infallible command over who we are and what we do; becoming aware of the ego, we gain freedom, choice, and the ability to open to more in life. With the Mandala of Being, we have a model and practices that strongly enable this transition from unconsciousness to consciousness.

Bio: For those that don't know, the author has more than three decades of experience teaching and writing about awareness and transformational practices. He draws on a great depth of experience in guiding others to higher awareness, as well as his own powerful experiences on the path.

Style: The writing style is tremendously rich and articulate. The progress of text is iterative rather than linear, like pealing the layers an onion versus driving from point A to point B. I would advise readers to simply progress through the book, knowing that some potentially challenging ideas will gain clarity as further context is developed. I might also advise to flip through until finding the Mandala chart (page 216 or so if I remember) as this can be a helpful mental anchor for the entire book's discussion. I have read this book alone as well as in a group and found both to be very rewarding experiences; some elements of the group experience can be very helpful for clarifying and amplifying the messages, though a group is not required.

In summation, I would very heartily recommend this book to anyone that is interested in personal transformation and/or awareness practices. It is among the few "must have" classics of the genre.

Many people obstruct their innate potential through repeated patterns of emotional struggle and suffering. This practical, hands-on guide explains why and how people habitually fall into this trap and provides a program, easily incorporated into everyday life, that frees them from this destructive behavior. Using a simple mandala, the book illustrates the four places humans go when they feel threatened, uncomfortable, or aren?t fully centered or grounded in the present moment. Like a trail of pebbles left behind on a hike, it helps trace the path back to the authentic self. Drawing on his three decades of teaching consciousness, Richard Moss plays the role of wise shepherd, accompanying and encouraging the reader on a journey toward the genius within and away from fear and other limitations. Most importantly, he offers an always-available compass that directs readers back to the true self, and into the magic of the present moment.
