Its OK to cry.

The author is clear that this book is not for everyone. Babywise is designed to lead infants to be secure in the real, imperfect world. If you desire to protect your child from the imperfections of life (i.e. prevent all crying at all costs), then this book is not for you. If you value the benefit of your child learning how to comfort themselves when they go to sleep, sleep through the night, wake up happy, be alert through the day, and content when not being held by mom, then the practices prescribed in this book, which includes allowing your baby to cry at appropriate times, will get your there. Reading comments from those opposed to the book you would think the author prescribes "causing" your baby to cry, which is not true. Crying is natural, and certain crying is good. If you do not accept this premise, then as other have said, its best to find another book. Father of twin boys.

Pretty Satisfied with Baby Wise

I am a first time mom and my friend who has a 8 month old, who is strictly breast fed and thriving, told me about this book. I read it and decided that when my son turned one month old I would implement the routine. My son was born weighing 8 lbs 14 1/2 oz. Since birth he has not lost one ounce. He is now 2 months old and weighs in at 14 lbs! He is not dehydrated or most importantly un-loved. My son gets plenty of hugs, kisses and snuggle time. He just responded very well to the routine. Now since he is still so young, I do not let him CIO. Though he usually falls fast asleep after his play time.
After reading some of these reviews I was pretty alarmed by all the fabrication. Ezzo's method is not child abuse, no where in the book does it state that it is okay to let them cry till they spit up blood.
All I know is that my son gets a full feeding (rather than all this snack feeding),is happy and healthy, but mostly importantly loved.
Now we do not follow his book to a T, but every child is different. We have modified it a bit for our son.
If you are thinking about using the Baby Wise routine. Read the book and decide for yourself.

Theologian Gary Ezzo and pediatrician Dr. Robert Bucknam set off cries of alarm in their highly controversial 1995 publication On Becoming Baby Wise by arguing that some crying is natural and healthy for babies. In this updated edition, Ezzo and Bucknam present a comprehensive method to encourage a full night's sleep for the seven- to nine-week-old baby. It's easy to read, easy to follow, supported by research and by testimonials from parents and pediatricians, and includes suggestions for making the process fit into the reader's lifestyle. The authors believe a consistent sleep routine leads to happier, more responsible, and better-adjusted children. But a full night's sleep is just the short-term goal. The long-term goal is training parents to bring order and stability to their families through nurturing the marriage, providing a loving structure for one's children, and allowing flexibility in the process.

Twelve chapters cover feeding philosophies, monitoring baby's growth, establishing baby's routine, handling multiple births, and the ever-controversial chapter on when baby cries. The 52-week method involves four phases, beginning with "Stabilization" from birth to week 8. During weeks 9 through 15 ("Extended Night"), babies learn to sleep through the night. Ezzo and Bucknam attempt to teach the difference between a baby's many cries and advise parents on various responses to these cries. Critics dislike Ezzo's strong belief that "child-centered parenting" (feeding baby whenever it cries, sleeping with and "wearing" baby) fosters demanding, insecure toddlers. But for parents who are tired of being tired--or whose previous experience with child-centered parenting supports Ezzo's theory--it may be worth a read. --Liane Thomas
