I wish I had a friend like Ramon!
I enjoyed this story. Both characters were likable especially Ramon. To bad he's only a character in a book. I think any woman would kill for someone to
love
them as much as he loved Mariah. Speaking of Mariah, I liked her and though I found her fear of loss/abandonment understandable, it dragged the story down just a bit.
I didn't give it a 4 or 5 because of the following reasons:
a. The ending was a bit to predictable.
b. The introduction of Mariah's ex-fiancee was unnecessary. The author could had done so much with that triangle but instead convienently dropped him from the story.
c. I began to find myself more interested in the supporting characters (Anthony and Lynn) relationship than the main relationship.
d. The author throws in the Imani/Perry relationship then...nothing.
Overall, read this when you have a free moment or two.

Good story but annoying heroine
3.5 stars - Despite what I am about to write I liked this book but like another reviewer said I found the romance between the secondary characters more interesting - Imani/Perry (who get their own book) and Lynn/Anthony (who deserved their own
Love
spectrum story). I can understand Mariah being reluctant to pursue a romantic relationship with someone she considered a brother but once she realised she fancied him and was prepared to share bodily fluids why not communicate with Ramon about her fears rather than running away, they are supposed to be '
Best
Friends
' after all. And once she realises that she loves him she still clammed up knowing that the guy professed his love for her and even proposed marriage- get real girl!. I agree in the real world how many men (especially Black men, mixed race as Ramon was or otherwise) would really put up with being rejected time and time again like that? And for truth any sensible women would have said yes to his proposal straight away - you lover proposes, you love him and he loves you but you need to think about it? Please!

I don't get it!
I read the earlier reviews of this book and I just don't get it. Not only did this book drag - but I felt that the main character was simply not that likeable. For someone who had supposedly lost everybody in her family - the way she was portrayed was not realistic. Her character was simply too over the top, unrealistic, and selfish. I didn't like her.
I like books that portray the actions of real people. I don't enjoy books where one person has to beg for the other persons affection and that's all this book was really about. Ramon and every other guy Mariah had contact with all seemed to be chasing her and all she does throughout the book is reject them. Yet there was no dialog about what made her supposedly so irresistible. There were not too many scenes of affection and passion. Ramon basically had to beg for Mariah's affections througout the entire book.
Often times books geared toward Blacks are unrealistic. I don't think that most men in Ramon's position would have put up with the heroine of this book. Throughout the entire book - Mariah was pushing Ramon away and he went back time after time.
The whole premise of this book was just too far fetched and unrealistic to think that real people would put themselves through that type of hype over and over again.
I brought this book based on the recommendations of the other readers and once again - I must say "I just don't get it."

I want a friend like Ramon, Oh Uh, I do!!
Ok, this was a first by Dunbar and it seems to me the girl's got talent. I fell in
love
with the plot of the story, truly a classic! Mariah and Ramon had sparks flying everywhere, it's a wonder what took them so long to figure it out! And that Ramon was something else. An African American/Puerto Rican mix, some might even change their standards after reading about Ramon! A must read!
Wonderful story of love between best friends
To
love
and marry your
best
fried ----- a dream come true. Although Ramon is convinced in the beginning that he and Mariah should take their
friends
hip to the next level, Mariah thinks that as lovers, her and Ramon's friendship will suffer. To use a well-weathered cliche, love conquers all. "Best of Friends" is a poignant love story between two friends. The characters are well-developed and believable. The story line is chocked full of romance and passion. A good read. Continued Success to Ms. Dunbar.
