MUST READ book!

To briefly introduce myself, I run one of the internet's biggest websites on the benefits of sunlight energy on all levels: biological, mental, emotional, and spiritual. It is called Sunlightenment. Nearly every day I post a new article. I also have been a barefoot runner since 2004 and teach yoga and meditation and practice nutritional counseling.

I was absolutely thrilled to find this book. In my search for scientific evidence to support my own firsthand personal experience with going barefoot, it's been difficult. There haven't been many studies on this "science". So when I read Dr. Stephen Sinatra's book Earthing, I was overjoyed to say the least. Now when people stop me to ask why I'm running barefoot, I have a stockpile of modern science to educate them with.

Since I began walking and running barefoot, I've noticed some remarkable changes. I first learned about walking barefoot from an Indian Yogi who taught me that all genuine yogis go without shoes because of the Earth-energy connection. He also taught me how to embody more of the Sun's healing energy (an ancient yoga practice), even to the point where I eat significantly less food and have more energy than I've ever had.

Personally, the first amazing change I experienced was the sensations of energy felt as tingles and subtle vibration in my entire body when walking barefoot on the bare earth. When I would stop walking and stand still my whole body would be tingling inside - like my blood and bones were vibrating. It still happens every time I walk or run barefoot. It is difficult to notice until I stop walking/running. Then it is unmistakable and simply amazing. I was always sure that it was more than just mechanical vibrations from walking or something similar to acupressure, now I have the scientific evidence to confirm my first hand experience. It is the Earth's energy!

The other benefits that I noticed (and they always happen) are improved mood and increased happiness. Walking and running barefoot always seems to lift any poor moods and make me immediately happy. When the stress of the modern world is getting to me, I simply toss off my sandals (I hardly wear shoes anymore, except to "social events" or during winter months) and stand, walk or run on the Earth with my skin soaking in the Sun's rays. Nothing feels better than moving my body and reconnecting to our planet and Sun.

Some guidance for future barefooters.... Going barefoot means that you will retrain your body how to move. We have been living a lifetime in tight shoes that don't let our foot bones and muscles move properly. This then causes imbalances in our entire skeletal system which then creates problems in our organs and mind. It may seem a bit "out there", but the science is there to back up the whole "one body, one mind / mind in matter" thing. When you start going barefoot, you will be retraining weak muscles to become strong. So go slow and expect sore calves for a few weeks. It will be a short transition period and you'll notice that your posture, digestion, emotions and thinking will all improve. An amazing book to educate you about the importance of correct posture is The New Rules of Posture: How to Sit, Stand, and Move in the Modern World. I highly recommend it. It is perhaps the only book a person will ever need on posture. Anyone practicing yoga, pilates, dance or even going to a chiropractor will benefit from this book. It adds so much.

One thing I'd like to add which I think anyone reading this review will benefit from is the importance of eating a natural diet. We are made of the Earth and have lived our entire human evolution on this planet. When we put unnatural foods into our body, we are creating the potential for sickness and disease. Eat organic foods and local foods. Cut out all processed foods. Load up on veggies. Myself and my partner teach people how to correctly live and help them to heal themselves (the body is self-healing when we learn how to support it). I teach yoga, meditation and nutritional counseling. She is a Chinese Medicine doctor, acupuncturist, herbalist, Myoskeletal Alignment therapist and past Neuromuscular Therapy instructor. We've been doing this type of work since 1986. Health and healing is our life's work.

Science Backed

This is an amazing book. The idea seemed so flaky to me that I would not have bought the book had I not been doing the sun gazing recommended at [...] recommends doing the practice barefoot so I bought "Earthing." I was surprised that it is backed by what appears to be good research. I made a foil tape covered bed sheet and tried it. My wife has trouble sleeping and it made a big difference for her. I think I sleep well but with the grounding I sleep even better. We bought the conducting half sheet and it is very nice. We also bought the wrist straps. They are elastic bands with metal tabs on them that connect to ground. They are nice but I think velcro straps with conducting tabs could be easily arranged if you want to save money. We live in an old house with out grounded electric sockets. We have a hot water heating system so I just put grounding connectors on the water pipes. I tested it and it makes a good ground. I mostly go bare footed but I made huaraches, simple sandals, as described at [...]. I made the back square and perpendicular to the outside edge. That way I can put the aluminum tape on the bottom and fold it over the back edge and under the bottom for grounding. I have not put on the foil yet. These are great. I wear them places where bare feet are not allowed. They fit in my back pocket so they are easy to carry if I want to have them handy. Not quit as nice as bare foot but much more comfortable than shoes.

I do not know whether Grounding is the greatest health discovery or not but it must be near the top of the list. The research supported idea that electricity from the ground can even out stress hormones, neutralize free radicals and reduce chronic inflammation is amazing. We think it makes a big difference. I highly recommend this book.

If you decide to make a foil sheet it is helpful that the sticky side of the foil is not conductive. I turned a piece of foil top down to connect the strips and then taped it down. There may be a better way but this worked and some solution is necessary.

Don't knock it until you've tried it!!

I was introduced to "Earthing" by an article I received from a friend. It just made sense to me, and I couldn't wait to read the book. I have suffered with psoriatic arthritis (inflammatory type, like rheumatoid) for about 8 years. I stopped using some of the stronger drugs because of the side effects, and have been trying to control the symptoms with NSAIDs (Naproxen). The pain and swelling in my hands, feet, and knees were severely limiting what I was able to do, to the point of not being able to pick up anything with my left hand, or rising from a chair without help. At first I skimmed the book, reading the beginning, and all of the testimonials. Then I jumped into "earthing" with both feet, (well, I didn't really jump, it hurt too much!) using an "earthing" sheet, and electrode patches on the most painful areas. I try to be Earthed" whenever, and wherever I can. In two weeks,the benefits are profound. The pain in my knees is almost gone, and my hands are nowhere near as swollen or painful as they were. Yesterday I picked up a full cup of coffee with my left hand!! It's been over a year since I was able to do that. I put grounding patches on my 89 year old mother, and it helps the pain in her back, and my sister uses an "earthing" electrode patch on her foot. I am the biggest cheerleader going for "Earthing" and am eternally grateful to Clint Ober for discovering and researching this technology. I wish I could meet him, or talk to him to thank him in person. If the book doesn't supply enough technical knowledge for you, do your own case study. You might be pleasantly surprised. I know this review is more about the topic, then the "guts" of the book, but I want everyone who is suffering from any kind of inflammatory condition to know about the potential benefits, from such an easy technique.
