A Witty Buddhist Nun expalins Shenpa, Prajna and Shenluk in "Getting Unstuck"

After reading "Always Maintain a Joyful Mind" I was about ready to give up on Pema Chodron; however, another reviewer, Carol M. Clark persuaded me that I should Listen to her 3-CD instruction set "Getting Unstuck" before doing so. I did and I was impressed.

Like Ms. Clark, I found Pema's voice soothing and he words insightful. An unexpected bonus was that she has a great sense of humor.

Pema gives credit to her teacher Dzigar Kongtual and introduces the Tibetan words and concepts of shenpa, prajna, and shenluk or renunciation. Shenpa is an uneasy feeling--that "sticky feeling"--that leads us to seek temporary relief--"getting hooked"--that is harmful to our health in the long-run. Chodron provides an analogy of scabies and scratching. The uneasy feeling is to scabies as scratching is to temporary relief. The result is the spread of scabies and no long-term relief. A real life example is using alcohol, food, or some other thing as a temporary relief to some other uneasiness in one's life to the point of an addiction that is unhealthy. Prajna on the other hand is the wisdom or openness to clearly see both the uneasy feeling and the connected habituation for what they really are. Shenluk or renunciation is the act of refraining or in the analogy above to stop scratching so that Prajna becomes more powerful than shenpa or as the title of the CD suggests, the act of "Getting Unstuck."

I enjoyed this set of CD's and have already begun listening to another set of CD's by Pema Chodron titled The Pema Chodron Audio Collection: Pure Meditation:Good Medicine:From Fear to Fearlessness.

Thanks Carol M. Clark for the tip about Pema Chodron's powerful CD's. I found them powerful, enjoyable and enlightening. I am sure that others will too.

Great Dharma Teachings for Drivers

I listened to the audio version which is appropriate since the audio is from live teachings on a weekend retreat.

I always like Pema Chodrun. Her experience as a mother and as a non-monastic really informs her wisdom as an advanced teacher. In this work she continues to refer to and revere her teacher Chogyum Trungpa Rinpoche; but she once makes a very dry comment about having some different views than his (to audience laughter). She manages to acknowledge all the stories about Chogyam's alcohol abuse and sexual adventures without lessening her view of him as a critical teacher and that is remarkable.

In addition to all the usual teachings about not getting hooked by shenpa (attachment), Pema gives some examples using a man she knows who was in prison for drug-use, and she waxes philosophic about the film "A Beautiful Mind."

Great for anyone!

I totally agree with C.E.'s assessment. Pema's accessible and often humorous delivery of actually very profound and potentially life altering lessons is a joy to listen to. I have read many of Pema's books and each time I am amazed at the buddhist insight into human nature. However, you definitely do NOT need to be a Buddhist to enjoy this. If your same old habits are not getting you anywhere, and you're ready to change them, this will give you great advice for getting started on that path. Enjoy and good luck!

amazing and insightful

I heard about Pema Chodron in Divinity school. Finally I purchased her CD and was absolutely inspired to live on a different level; the level of awareness of that itch, of exploring sitting with that itch. I learned about shenpa and this was a breakthrough for me, for I had heard it referred to as attachment/non-attachment and never fully grasped this for I did not see attachment as a hiderance. As Chodron spoke of the pull of shenpa, I apprehended something of what my Buddhist friends meant when they said non-attachment.

Chodron has a way about her that makes eastern philosophy conversant with the West; this should come as no surprise for her teacher was Chogyam Trungpa, know for making Buddhism comprehensible to the Western world. Chodron is engaging with a pleasant voice and has a sense of humor about herself. She is always respecful of the audience (this was a workshop that was recorded).

There I three discs in this set and I listened to them on my commute in less than a week. Amazing what I learned in my car. The material presented here is life changing and I have begun applying it to my work. It is practical and has many real life applications. In addition there is a segment for meditation; I dont reccomend this part while driving.

Gratitude for Pema Chodron

An urge comes up, we succumb to it, and it becomes stronger. We reinforce our cravings, habits, and addictions by giving in to them repeatedly. Pema Chödrön guides us through this "sticky feeling" and offers us tools for learning to stay with our uneasiness, soften our hearts toward others, and ourselves and live a more peaceful life in the fullness of the present moment.
