If you are a communicator, you need to read this book!

Well the title sums it up, if you are a communicator and truly want to get better at what you do, then pick up this book. Andy Stanley, one of Christians best communicators, shares a wealth of information and helping advice to get your audience to there destination. Highly recommend this book to all who want to get better or just want to start speaking.

Great book!

This is an excellent book for any preacher or teacher in ministry! Andy Stanley has a simplistic yet attention grabbing way of writing. A must have for anyone who speaks publicly in a local church.

Creative Format - Valuable Reminder for Preachers & Teachers

Andy & Lane create a fun read that teaches.

I knew the preaching principles about which they wrote, I have even the same concepts in Bible college, but when it came time to assess what I actually did on Sunday morning ... bzzzzzt! Disconnect.

This is a gut-check for most pastors who struggle to break out of the moldy practices of the past, their personal stylistic rut, and other bad habits.

This is a how-to for the essentials of a message that will be heard AND remembered.

There is little point to a message that is mere entertainment or so boring that it is merely tolerated -- both are poor stewardship of precious moments with a group of people who may never hear the Word again the rest of the week.

Thanks to Andy and Lane for a valuable wake-up call!

Very Helpful

Stanley clearly outlines steps to effective sermon preparation, understanding it is not a sermon until it is preached. And Lane Jones wraps it all around a cool story. The ONE thing that helped me most is the ONE point idea: Focus! Focus! Focus! Thanks be to God these servants and my friend who recommended this very helpful resource.

Worthwile in concept - troubling statements

Stanley's style of writing is refreshing and clear. His single-minded focus on memorable clarity in communication is valuable for any communication purpose, although his stated purpose as a preacher is always life change in the audience. Within that context the importance of the single take-away truth may be justified.

The initial step of `pick a point' is rather standard practice in message preparation. Stanley diverges in his preparation method to insist on delivering only one point (i.e. application, insight, or principle) to make sure the audience leaves with a concrete truth and application.

In his illustrations, all of his techniques are useful and can be employed to advantage. However, there are some troubling questions behind the methods that deserve examination. For instance, what if the biblical text reveals more than one point integral to its central theme? If we believe that the bible's content is revelation, and the method of delivery (the writers' exposition) is inspired, do we do a disservice by possibly truncating the message in a single point? Could this "dumb down" what the bible says?

Stanley's statement that "HOW you say what you say is as important as WHAT you say" (p.146, emphasis as in text) is troubling. In his discussion he sometimes seems to confuse presentation with interpretation. For instance, when discussing various bible stories he says that "The stories don't change. The variable is our presentation." (p.148). Although this is partially true, the important task is interpreting meaning; presentation is secondary. Do we risk using inappropriate methods by focusing too much on presentation? What methods are appropriate? While these questions may not have easy answers, we would do well to keep them in mind.
