A Flop.

After reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and falling in love with it I grew very excited to learn another book would be coming out shortly. To be honest I was disappointed with this read, I like P&P&Zombies, because of the romance, the humor, and Zombie attacks, but all I found in this latest book was fighting and more fighting. It grew boring at places. And the characters did not seem like themselves. I don't really know if this new author, fully grasped the characterization of all the Bennets, making this book dull and upsetting. I grew tired of Jane, yes shes soft and sensative, but she seemed dull and emotionless, which all you P&P fans know, is not true. I don't know if it was just me, but I did not enjoy reading about endless training and zombies attacking...after reading it, I asked myself this...What was the point of writing that book? Being a romantic myself, I guess I fell in love with the original P&P and P&P&Zombies, because of the wit, knowledge the characters pocessed, and of course the love(which I am sure everyone enjoys!!! ) This book is ok, but I suggest reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies or Sense and Sensebility and Sea Monsters instead.

Funny, gross, and a nice take on Austen

I think I may have enjoyed this prequel even better than Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I think freeing himself from an already well known plot worked well for this author. It had the feel of a Jane Austen book in speech and mannerisms, but lost the expectation of BEING Pride and Prejudice. I could see the original characters clearly in their representation in this book. The only flaw was that it was hard to get emotionally involved with the love interests in the book as we clearly knew the girls would end up with none of them. I must admit, I really liked his backstory regarding the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Bennett and why they treat each other the way they do.

A Fun Ride, if a Tad Unnecessary

As Quirk Classics continues to roll out the mash-up novels (Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters; Android Karenina (Quirk Classic)), they chose to return to the scene of their greatest success in this prequel to the smash success of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Classic Regency Romance - Now with Ultraviolent Zombie Mayhem!. While "Dawn of the Dreadfuls" is a fun ride filled with "bone-crunching zombie violence", ultimately it was an unnecessary return to a story that was already done.

One reason that the Quirk Classics are so accessible is that they take the sensibilities of classic literature and fill them with modern horror/action/adventure. While it sounds like an unlikely recipe for success, "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" worked because it turned Jane Austen's beloved classic "Pride and Prejudice" into something that the current generation of teenagers would actually enjoy reading -- and in this day and age, where literate youngsters are at an all-time low, the world could use an incentive to read again.

One reason that the aforementioned titles have worked so well, however, is that they are a mash-up of a sci-fi/horror idea with an already-established classic. "Dawn of the Dreadfuls," being largely an original idea, fails to work as well or to gel as slickly as its predecessors because it has all of the power of a Hollywood reboot: why retread ground already successfully covered? Reading "Dreadfuls" was somewhat like watching the latest Freddy Kreuger movie -- it was enjoyable and ridiculously campy, and left you wondering toward the end why they even bothered in the first place.

While I would heartily recommend this volume to all the fans of the original "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies", I'd hardly call this necessary reading. However, there are reasons why direct-to-DVD sequels continue to be created, and the metaphor seems apt in this case. 3 and 1/2 out of 5 stars. (Well, they tried.)

Journey Back to Regency England?Land of the Undead!

Readers will witness the birth of a heroine in Dawn of the Dreadfuls a thrilling prequel set four years before the horrific events of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. As our story opens, the Bennet sisters are enjoying a peaceful life in the English country side. They idle away the days reading, gardening, and daydreaming about future husbands until a funeral at the local parish goes strangely and horribly awry.

Suddenly corpses are springing from the soft earth and only one family can stop them. As the bodies pile up, we watch Elizabeth Bennet evolve from a naive young teenager into a savage slayer of the undead. Along the way, two men vie for her affections: Master Hawksworth is a powerful warrior who trains her to kill, while thoughtful Dr. Keckilpenny seeks to conquer the walking dead using science instead of strength. Will either man win the prize of Elizabeth's heart? Or will their hearts be feasted upon by hordes of marauding zombies? Complete with romance, action, comedy, and an army of shambling corpses, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls will have Jane Austen rolling in her grave and just might inspire her to crawl out of it!
