Delivers on Promise!

I thoroughly enjoyed October's Promise! It's definitely a romance, but with enough of a mystery running through it to keep things interesting. One of my gripes with lesbian romances is that sometimes the dialogue feels a little stilted. Not the case with this book - the dialogue between the characters sounds so natural it really brings them to life. That alone puts this a step above a lot of other books in my opinion. I do agree with one of the other reviewers here who said she wished there'd been a little more about Quinn's background included in the story, but that's just a very minor complaint and I think more of a compliment to Quinn's character, because I really wanted to know more about her. But definitely five stars from me on this one, and I hope we get to see a lot more from this writer in the future.

Leaf Peeper's Paradise

I was shocked to learn this was Marianne Garver's first lesbian romance.
I loved it.
It's well written, with interesting plot twists and the dog needs a story all on his own.
I'm looking forward to the next Turtle Cove novel.

Just a dog hair short of five stars

Character development is paramount to my enjoying a storyline and in this, the story does not disappoint. The only thing keeping me from rating this as a five start work is that I wish the character of Quinn was as sharply defined as the character of Libby. Some will say that it is, that a cloud of mystery needs to surround Quinn in order for us to see her as the strong, silent type. I still think more attention could have been given to her character.

This love story is beautifully crafted. I do so appreciate the author giving us a realistic glimpse into the advertising world early in the book. Reading about a character in the worksplace tells us a great deal about the character of a person. Clearly, Libby is a risk taker in the corporate environment, someone who will not hesitate to fight for something she believes in. These two characteristics alone are helpful to understanding Libby's later actions both inside and outside the advertising world.

The mysterious little dog is absolutely delightful as Cupid, bringing the two women together. Five stars doesn't even begin to capture his power or presence in the story.

Loved This Book!

I thoroughly enoyed "October's Promise," from the first page to the last. I read it over several days, not wanting to rush the experience, and during that time (and for a few days afterwards) the characters hovered about in my head. The story lines stayed with me as I tried to out-guess the author, who plays her cards brilliantly, providing exactly the right amount of clues (not too much, not too little) so that when the surprises are eventually revealed, the discerning reader can go back and see the the paths that lead up to some very satisfying conclusions. Twice during the book I got a genuine thrill, little chills that ran up my spine at something the author revealed. I know this book is a romance but there is mystery in it as well. It's a great read!

Disappointing!

Although the descriptions of autumn in New England are quite accurate, you can almost see the foliage as described by the author, the rest of it is weak. The characters are under developed, they seemed to be plucked out of thin air, then when an explanation is given as to whom they are or where they come from it only confuses the plot more.
The dog is cute at times, but even that concept gets tired after a while.

Just because parts of her life are unsatisfactory and dull, there's no reason for Libby Jackson to bolt for New Hampshire, even if she did just receive a large inheritance from a mysterious source. But she does just that. The urban comforts of New York quickly seem light years away when her journey is hampered by cars that won't start, locks that won't turn and a strange dog that has decided that Libby would be the perfect owner.

Quinn Barnett is in no mood for damsels in distress. Her reasons for partaking of New England's fall colors are deeply personal and painful. She's promised to do one thing on this trip, and falling in love isn't it. Once her mission is accomplished she's moving on--if only she can start some cars, unlock some doors and get that bothersome stray to leave her alone.

The golden shores of a beautiful New England lake and the glory of October's sunsets should create the perfect stage for falling in love, unless two stubborn women decide to keep the wrong promises.

Bella Books proudly presents this refreshing, new voice in lesbian romance! Marianne Garver's charming first novel features an unforgettable Cupid in a setting readers will wish they could find on a map.
