Great dragon tale!
I've been reading the reviews of this series off and on for over a year now, seeing them appear on lists of fantasy books and still not sure they would work in an elementary school library. The first book has an AR book level of 5.7 but that's beside the point: these are great books! I finally broke down and bought the first two as paperbacks and now I wish I had gotten the hardbounds so I could add them to the library and I'd have the 3rd book so I could read it.
My favorite part is Creel's independence. She's an excellent role model for everyone - be true to your heart and speak up when you see or hear wrongdoing. She does the things that need to be done, even when she's terrified and if that's not a description of bravery, I don't know what is. I didn't get the overwhelming sense that these are "girls" books either, though guys might not care for the sewing parts. I really, really liked the
dragon
s - they have such distinct personalities and quirks, just like the rest of us and were portrayed logically and consistently throughout the 2 books I've read.
These books would be wonderful additions to any school library or home collection - there's something here for everyone!

No wimpy princess
This is no helpless princess waiting to be rescued story! Creel is spunky and tender hearted, and the
dragon
s are charming and fun. A prince, an evil princess, fabulous sidekicks, a war and a teeny bit of romance. Loved it. All of her books amaze and entertain me :)
Best book I've ever read!
Dragon
Slippers
is the best book i've EVER read!! I was very happy when I got it. The story is very intereting and when you pick it up, you don't want to put it down! It's that good! I have sat reading this book for almost two and a half HOURS! If you decide to make a purchase and you buy this book, you will be very, very happy with your purchase. I don't want to really say anything about the inside and what really happens because you have to find out for yourself and I don't want to give it away! So, I hope if you purchase this, you will be as delighted with it as I am!

Truly enjoyable
After a hundred thousand vampire romances this was a great change in pace. Jessica Day George writes fantasy in a fairytale fashion that makes me want to pull out my red fairy book and start reading through it one more time. I wouldn't say that the book is extraordinary, but I think it was worth every penny I paid. I also have Princess of the Midnight Ball and Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow. Both were just as good and just as worth getting.
Fun but substantial dragon fantasy
Premise: When Creel, the heroine, is sent by her impoverished family to be eaten by the local
dragon
, the hope is that some valiant hero will rescue her, subsequently taking her off their hands. However, Creel is more independent and enterprising. Instead, sort of like in Wrede's Dragon series, she befriends the dragon, who ends up giving her a special pair of
slippers
.
These slippers of the title are the beginning of a grand adventure that will lead our heroine from another dragon's lair to a dress shop to the center of the kingdom itself.
Dragon Slippers is another of the breed of young adult fantasy novels with a clever, light tone, in first person, with a sassy but hard working protagonist who doesn't let hardship get her down. I say "another" but that's not an implied criticism. It just seems to be a popular subgenre right now and I for one am enjoying these clean-cut stories that are uplifting and interesting without being treacly. The heroine is a talented character without being flawless. She has doubts and weaknesses and can have a hot temper.
There is even a touch of romance in here though it is watered down for the age group the book seems to be aimed at, about ages 10-15. I loved it and I'm a lot older than 10. The world setting and plot are also very intricate. This is not a "thin" book. I would recommend this for readers who enjoy this subgenre, for starters, but also readers, even adults, who miss the more stand-alone fantasy stories that don't seem to be published as often anymore since there are so many dark plots and series.

When an orphan girl named Creel befriends a
dragon
, she unknowingly inherits a pair of
slippers
that could be used to save her kingdom, or destroy it. Perfect for fans of Shannon Hale and Cornelia Funke?s Dragon Rider, the light tone and charming characterizations bring this heartwarming fantasy to life. Older middle grade readers and young teens alike will appreciate the adventure, fun, and dragon-drenched action!
