Dumb Title, Good Book

Ellie Phillips, DDS has written a book detailing the dental care regimen she recommends for her patients. Contrary to the eye catching title, she is not suggesting people stop seeing their dentist, but rather proposes a more preventative approach to keep dental problems to a minimum.

Her focus is on a series of rinses that adjust the mouth's chemistry, creating a healthier environment to facilitate the destruction of bad bacteria that cause plaque on teeth and contribute to gum disease, and encourage the growth of good bacteria that help bolster the natural rebuilding capabilities of our teeth.

Dr. Phillips explains why, although faithfully brushing and flossing, individuals may still have serious dental problems, but what is particularly helpful is her clear and non-technical explanations regarding why our current methods aren't working and why this system has good results. The book is actually interesting to read. There is a wealth of information for both adults and children along with some revealing material on the effect bleaching has on tooth health.

Trying the Dr. Phillips' system is not difficult or time consuming. The products are all available over the counter and on the internet with most being moderately priced. I am a cautious person and do not try every new fad that comes along, particularly when it comes to medical matters. I was interested in this book because I want to keep my teeth, not harm them. Dr. Phillips has been using this system for many years in her practice with success. What I read in her book makes sense to me, so I have started the program. It has been two weeks and entirely too soon to be reporting on my progress, but I can say my mouth has never felt cleaner.

I am not a dental professional or a chemist, and I haven't been using the system long enough to provide definitive proof of results, so this review isn't an endorsement of the Dr. Phillips process. That said, I am impressed enough to encourage anyone else interested in the subject matter, to read the book. I read it in one sitting and learned a great deal about teeth and gums. That information alone is valuable to me and made the book worth my time.

Better Late Than Never

This book is truly worth its weight in gold. Dr. Ellie does a great job of explaining the caries disease process in a way that's memorable and easy to understand. Best of all, her advice is current and evidence-based. I only wish I found it sooner. Personally, I feel inspired and empowered after reading it.

If you have dental troubles despite brushing and flossing as advised, don't despair. This book may contain an important "missing link" in your oral hygiene routine. By understanding and addressing the infectious component of caries disease you can take control of your oral health and halt the cycle that goes from weakened enamel to cavities to fillings to bigger fillings to broken teeth to crowns and root canals.

In the book, Dr. Ellie recommends specific but common OTC products to use in sequence, 2 to 3x daily. She details how to use xylitol in a way that maximizes its oral health benefits, including acting directly on acid-producing microbes that are usually the main culprits behind cavity formation. She also describes how factors beyond hygiene and habits can affect oral health. For example: hormones, stress, dry mouth, acid reflux, etc.

Another great feature worth mentioning is that the information is useful to people of all ages/stages of life. You can learn about gender-specific challenges. New moms and moms-to-be can learn how to practice disease prevention for their growing family well before baby teeth make an appearance. Anyone can learn about specific things to look for in a dentist and/or treatment plan when armed with the important information in this book.

Great book, awesome advise, silly title

I just picked this book off the new arrivals section and flipped to one section "xylitol" the mystery sugar that I have been wondering about. I found information that I was looking for. I started reading the book last night and finished most on it this morning. I can't wait to put the sound advise to use and share the information with family and friends. Totally worth the investment. Easy to read and comprehend.

an ounce of prevention beats a root canal!

I picked up this book from the library yesterday. Read it cover to cover and just finished it. Photocopied several pages and took copious notes.

I was first introduced to tooth remineralization a few years ago by a lonely webpage which talked about the chemistry of the teeth, how enamal is continuously created, eaten away, and restored when your saliva is in an alkaline state and you are breathing. I experimented with sucking on magnesium tablets, calcium tablets, flouride rinses and found my teeth rejuvinating very quickly. I even managed to get a dental cary at the base of my gumline to go from black to white in a matter of days as new enamel formed over the old rot spot.

The author of this book does such an amazing job explaining the chemistry of teeth, analogizes the enamel to the toughness an eggshell, and talks about the dangerous practices people use on a regular basis thinking their helping but are in fact HURTING their teeth.

The program is simple, cheap and very easy to do. As soon as I get to the drugstore, I'll be picking up the things mentioned in the book, and I've already ordered some xylitol products via amazon.

I've got some nasty tooth work ahead of me, and I'm going to try to improve things to see if I can avoid the expensive procedures they have in store for me.

I'll let you know how it progresses.
