wonderful if you withhold your preconceptions
This book, and Dr. Vallee's work, while being unaccepted by the mainstream and even by many UFOlogists, is regardless phenomenal and unprecedented. Please read if you have an interest in UFOs and are tired of the standard explanations. This is a must-read for anyone with an open mind and a creative side. You don't have to believe the theories, they are theories after all, but at the least, you will be exposed to a new and fascinating side of the UFO mystery, and indeed, of the mysteries of many unexplained encounters and "miracles" through the ages.
Excellent introduction
Awhile back I put together a "get-up-to-speed" collection of UFO-related books for our (Methodist) church's District Director of Evangelism to substantiate the belief, which Vallee points out, that the "UFO phenomenon" is really demonic manifestations. Books I included were Dr. John Mack's, M.D.'s "Passport to the Cosmos", Hugh Ross/Ken Samples/Mark Clark's "Lights in the Sky and Little Green Men", William M. Alnor's "UFO's in the New Age: Extraterrestrial Messages and the Truth of Scripture", and
Dimensions
along with about 2 others.
This is one of the best introductory books on the subject, from someone with rock-solid credentials (M.S. in Astronomy, worked as a professional astronomer, Ph.D. in Computer Sciences, co-inventor of the Internet, venture capitalist, author of books on computer theory, modern history, finance) respected by EVERYONE who knows ANYTHING about this field.

Very scholarly and informative.
I read this when it was released and bought this reprint version to re-read it. It makes links between Celtic tales, tales of sylphs, tales of religious apparitions, and modern UFO events that is very convincing. Additionally it scientifically analyzes this data to determine that we are dealing with a multi-dimensional phenomena that manipulates space and time in order to manipulate human culture and evolution. In order to understand what is really going on, we must consider what has been going on in human history. Jacques Vallee makes the hypothesis that the reported UFO phenomena is processing humanity through behavior modification toward a future goal or agenda and that our awareness of this process is crucial for our freedom to evolve as independent beings.

A fundamental and game-changing insight
I am not sure how much this is a reprint versus an update of the original work, but either way, it remains an outstanding presentation of a - to me - immediately convincing perspective on the whole subject.
He starts from the fact that many aspects of UFO encounters are basically absurd - statements are made by the "
alien
s" that are either nonsensical or oddly mundane (and how do they speak to us?)or the whole thing is just bizarre in some way, or physically implausible. And yet, something did happen: there are visible after-effects, both physical on the ground and biological and mental, even spiritual, for those involved. From this springs his fundamental insight: he rejects the common concept that "if" they exist, they are interstellar travelers, and posits that instead, they are manifestations of some other reality or dimension, or the multiverse.
That enables him to bring together all the historic appearance of strange creatures, inexplicable sights in the heavens, and so forth, as manifestations of the same - what? Energy, entities, forces....But whatever the source, the key and insightful statement he makes is that "the shapes of the objects, the appearances of their occupants, and their reported statements vary as a function of the cultural environment into which they are projected." (The last part is italicized for emphasis).
Thus in 1897 in the Midwest, the visitors are bearded characters from an "airship" that "corresponded to the popular concept of a flying machine: it had wheels, turbines, powerful lights." As described, it could not possibly fly...but what matters is that in the imaginations of that time, it was appropriate. He gives much discussion of all the legends of "little people" and notes many fascinating resonances with our UFO occurrences - time dilation, for instance.
In other words, I find this the best and most convincing insight into the nature of these events, but also a disturbing one, since the ability to manifest in such sly and clever ways must raise the question - "why?" Vallée sees us as being prodded or manipulated in a slow, long-term way towards some kind of change in our basic nature - but what that is, is unclear. I suppose we will find out, or our descendants will.

st anthony
I respect the authors true wish to search for the truth and not the thin surface film which disguises is as most others do and dont see the danger of such an approach.I would like to comment on the paragraph of st anthonys supposed
contact
with a being which was neither an angel nor a demon. If you read all of saint anthonys works and his life as written by his disciple st Athanasius you will see that demonic apparitions and attacks occured throughout his life in the desert and were always treated as such.demons.this so called encounter totally contradicts st Anthonys reaction to all such phenomena of which the described creature is clearly a demon.an ascetic living all his life in the darkest deserted places on earth and constantly at war with the forces of evil would never ever react in such a superficial acceptance of the story of a goat legged creature.clearly a demon.this is fabricated blasphemy of the truth created by someone who opposes the truth many centuries ago.

In
DIMENSIONS
, the first volume of a trilogy, Dr. Jacques Vallee reexamines the historical record that led to the modern UFO phenomenon and to the belief in
alien
contact
. He then tackles the enigma of abduction reports, which come from various times and various countries, as well as the psychic and spiritual components of the contact experience. In the last portion of the book, he notes the factors that inhibit research into the phenomenon--the triple coverup and political motivations--and concludes that the extraterrestrial theory is simply not strange enough to explain the facts.
