Anton Beevor's Fall of Berlin 1945
An exceptional book! I read and re-read. Beevor is a wonderful writer and his use of varied sources is amazingly thorough. The book covers this fascinating topic from many points of view. This is an absorbing book, filled with very personal details from individuals as well as a thorough depiction of military strategy. I am going to read more of his books.
A great insight into the plight of the civilian
An excellent book that covers the last days of the Third Reich. Although it provides a valuable source of detailed information it is an easy book to read and most enjoyable for those who want to understand what happened in the final days of World War II.
To me this book is perhaps more about the personalities involved on both sides (especially German and Russian). It also details extensively the experiences of the common civilian caught up in events and horrors beyond their control. The book is about winners and losers and how each handled the situation they found themselves in. Some did not survive while others were already looking beyond the end of the war to the next political stand off between nations.
If you want a detailed understanding of how the closing acts of the Second World War played out then this book is for you. If you want a greater insight into some of the most famous names in modern history then this book is also for you. If however you are interested in history then perhaps above all this book is for you as it truly represents one of the most climatic events of recent times.

A gripping read
With new information obtained from the Soviet archives, Antony Beevor reconstructs the dramatic race between the Soviets and the Americans to reach
Berlin
at the end of World War II. A gripping read that is made more intense as the reader knows the terrible devastation that awaited the residents of Berlin.

Beast, Monster and the Giant.
A MUST WWII history book!! Monster from the East who got steroid injections from the Giant, kills the Beast. Monster calms down facing the Giant, but slowly gets mentally ill. How different were East and West fronts !! Horror, bloody pictures painted by the words. Nobody to trust, everybody for himself. Hellish cruelty and suffering of civilians? - no reason for disbelieve. We humans are capable of doing such things.

Brilliant narrative
I followed this story enthralled from the first words. I thought I knew WW II, but realized quickly that this story, lasting barely 5 months, formed a hidden half of the war that was both gripping and had a lasting impact on the eastern and western Europe.
The Red Army's invasion of
Berlin
in January
1945
was one of the most terrifying examples of fire and sword in history. Frenzied by terrible memories of Wehrmacht and SS brutality, the Russians wreaked havoc, leaving hundreds of thousands of civilians dead and millions more fleeing westward. Drawing upon newly available material from former Soviet files, as well as from German, American, British, French, and Swedish archives, bestselling author Antony Beevor vividly recounts the experiences of the millions of civilians and soldiers caught up in the nightmare of the Third Reich's final collapse. The
Fall
of Berlin 1945 is a heartrending story of pride, stupidity, fanaticism, revenge, and savagery, yet it is also one of astonishing human endurance, self-sacrifice, and survival against all odds.
