Just as good as I had hoped.

This book is small but not short, and it's very very funny for adults who know anything at all about victorian literature.

Somewhat juvenile

The book reminds me of a game we once played. A friend supplied a number of porno pulp novels, and we were to select two excerpts and create a third. Upon reading aloud the other players were to guess which were real and which was made up. The results were surprising, as the most vile and disturbing sequences had been contrived by the more seemingly sedate young ladies. One had to do with the freshly severed phallus of a donkey being fashioned into a hat.

Gorey is delightful.

I have always loved Gorey's work, but The Curious Sofa is probably my favorite. It is funny and twisted and everything you would expect from Gorey, and it made me laugh out loud throughout.

The sofa isn't very curious and the story isn't pornographic, but it's an interesting little book from Gorey. Only for die-hard fans.

They are unspeakable because our author, Edward Gorey, only suggests what may or may not be occurring. Whether or not The Curious Sofa succeeds will depend entirely upon your own imagination.

For a book of so few pages, there is so much to discuss.....How does one play Thumbfumble? How is is that the colonel and his wife are both missing their left legs? What are Scylla's anatomical peculiarities? Is Gerald psychotic or is he suffering from temporary insanity? Is the sofa really all THAT terrible?
