Great Read for Clevelanders of a Certain Era

Having lived through the great gas explosion in Cleveland during my childhood, it was fascinating to relive it through the eyes of Robertson's character in the book. I bought a copy for a friend as well. If you enjoy recent history and especially if you are from Cleveland, you'll enjoy reading about the people and places he recounts in his book.

Still Great After All These Years

I read this book 40 years ago and loved it. I thought it was even better the second time around. It's full of delightful characters with all the human foibles. If you're not crying or laughing, check your pulse, you can't be alive. It's an American classic. Too bad Frank Capra isn't alive to make it into a motion picture.

The best of the best of the best

The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread and its two sequels are three of life's best things to happen to me. I have read them in the sixties, again in the 80's, the 90's, treasure the books that I have, and plan to read again before I leave this planet.

The simplicity, honesty, and sheer joy of these books and Morris Bird III's character have given me a wonderful gift. I am a reader. I have read some awful things that were highly rated, and some wonderful things that were lowly rated. My three Morris Bird books are ones that I reccommend to my real friends who are looking for some joyous reading. We all KNOW Morris Bird III. He is us.

Lovely and Engaging

A book about how the journey without merges with the journey within. I loved this book -- from the simple premise of a child setting out on the longest adventure he could plan at such a young age to the writing itself. Although I occassionally found myself lost in the midst of a overly long paragraph, I forgive Robertson because the majority of the the writing is perfect, simple yet gripping. A great adventure tale about a true American child -- the child who sets out on his quest for all the right reasons, saves the day, and never realizes just how incredible he really is.

A joy to read

I couldn't be more pleased that this author has written other books. I feel that I am guaranteed some wonderful reading options in the near future. A wonderful character and story. Buy it you'll love it.

On a quiet autumn afternoon in 1944, nine-year-old Morris Bird III decides to visit a friend who lives on the other side of town. So he grabs the handle of his red wagon and, with his little sister in tow, begins an incredible pilgrimage across Cleveland . . . and out of childhood forever.

Set against the backdrop of one of the worst industrial disasters in American history, Don Robertson's enduring, beloved masterwork is a remarkable story of destiny, bravery, and responsibility, as fresh and relevant as when it first appeared in print.
