Pleasant suprise

I was preparing to be dissapointed with this book, but I was wrong. When I bought it, I didn't realize it was about meditation-I thought it was more comparative religion. The meditation method described is simpler and easier than what is taught by more formal teachers. That resonates with me. Simple is better.

Even though the focus is on meditation rather than tradition, Selby gives an insightful tour of the featured teachers, which is, in turn, a tour of the major religions. The synthesis he comes to is a very deep understanding of becoming a witness. He says that at our deepest level we are simply awareness. This observation is held in common with several major spiritual thinkers. In other words, the book is a good primer on the new spirituality, or "new age".

Another good point is the inclusion of Gurdjieff-a Sufi, and Krishnamurti. Both of these teachers, although famous in their lifetimes, have been neglected by many recent writers. Selby weaves the insights of all seven into an understanding of what we truly are.

The right thing at the right time!

I just took my first step on the meditative path to spiritual awakening by purchasing and reading this wonderful book from John Selby. This piece makes available to the reader, the fundamental principle(s) behind each of the seven masters method of contemplation vis a vis elicitor phrases, that serve to point the mind in a specific direction.

A synopsis of each master and their particular mode of inner travel is discussed; followed by a small meditative pause to allow the reader to hold in place and internalize the information presented. The book is well written, descriptive but not in any way abstruse, profound yes, but not abstruse.

The most remarkable aspect of this book is the assistance it makes available through the 7masters website, which offers downloadable audio guidance - which I find absolutely invaluable. I think this is a fantastic way to begin a meditative regimen. 5 stars easily!!

Just What I Wanted

Mr. Selby has put together a wonderful meditation program and tied it to the teachings of five of the greatest religious leaders / philosophers in the history of man. To complete his book he used two more from contemporary times.

The book works. I always felt good after reading a section and it started me on the path of meditation. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in enhancing the spiritual aspect of their lives.

I THOUGHT I knew alot about breathing

I've been doing zazen for a while now and I thought that I knew a lot about breathing...as I sat in the back yard reading this book two young girls were taunting me verbally with all their might...using the guilt trip, songs, name calling...among other things, I kept my cool and they knew it was the book guiding me through a breathing meditation. I haven't finished this book yet, but the simple guided meditations are great. It might be something to help you calm your nerves too. Take care.

Great meditation lessons

This book lays out the interesting premise that the world's great spiritual teachers (Jesus, Lao Tsu, Buddha, among others) have travelled the same path and that integrating their teachings can help the ordinary human on her journey to peace and enlightenment. Each chapter focuses on the life and wisdom of one of the teachers, and what benefits their particular teaching can bring. His writing is very practical and can be implemented immediately into your own meditation practice.

Seven Masters, One Path brings together the seven primary practices of the world?s most revered spiritual masters -- Krishnamurti, Lao-tzu, Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed, Gurdjieff, and Patanjali -- in one simple yet complete program. Finally everyone who wants to learn how to meditate, or to deepen their meditation practice, can turn to one comprehensive guidebook that leads readers gently yet surely into experiencing the seven universal dimensions of daily meditation practice.

Seven Masters, One Path guarantees access to deep meditative experience for people seeking relief from emotional and mental stress, and especially for anyone who longs to experience a deeper sense of connection with our spiritual core. No matter how divergent all the theologies, philosophies, rituals, and dogmas of the world?s great meditative traditions might appear, John Selby reveals that the underlying intent of the original masters was remarkably similar -- to help people to point their attention toward regular contact with the divine, through opening hearts and souls to direct communion with God by whatever name.

Offering one meditation each from the seven teachers, Seven Masters, One Path emphasizes the commonalities in the diverse traditions, ultimately providing a unique and accessible meditation program that anyone can master.
