Another wonderful book from Oppel!

This series is fast becoming one of my favorites! A great deal of this has to do with the protagonist being such a wonderful, upstanding, young man who tries his hardest to do what's right, and questions himself when he falls short (even if his failings were not from his own actions).

Oppel has created a new cast of supporting characters for Skybreaker and they are just as detailed and intriguing as the cast of Airborn (first book in the series). Returning to Skybreaker are certain other favorite characters from the first book, whom I now feel are like my good friends :)

Skybreaker continues a little while after Airborn, (AIROBORN SPOILERS TO FOLLOW)

Matt is now in the Academy and is no longer a crewman aboard the Aurora. However, when the ship he's temporarily crewing is thrown off course and by chance discovers the Hyperion - a huge ship lost decades ago, with supposedly vast treasure aboard - Matt must decide what, if anything, he's will to risk to retrieve the Hyperion, and it's treasure.

This is a fast paced adventure full of heart and wonderful characters. While I felt a few parts towards the beginning were a little slow, the adventure definitely picks up about a third of the way through. And though I'd probably give Skybreaker four stars compared to Airborn, compared to other books it's worthy of all five stars.

I listened to the Audiobook and am continually impressed with it's production! Kate is voiced by a different actress than in Airborn, so it took me a while to warm up to her, but after a while I felt she embodied Kate well. And the other actors are all delightful!

Definitely, HIGHLY recommended!!!

great adventure for all ages

My daughter and I loved this series. The first two books were the best. The descriptive language is just right, not so much that a younger reader would be bored, and enough that any reader can have the right pictures in their heads. This is a good old fashioned adventure story with both a boy and girl adventurer. I appreciated the lack of stereotyping re. gender. I also appreciated that the story was 'clean' without being too moralistic. My daughter loves a romance element in her books (I don't) and this series does have that.

I definitely don't appreciate the reviewers who suggest that this is a good series specifically for boys. Just say no to gender stereotyping already!

I would highly recommend, couldn't think of any reason to take away stars.

A new modern time

If anyone asked me about this book, they would watch me as I gave a little jump of excitement and tell them that it was just amazing. "Skybreaker" is the sequel to "Airborn", set in a time where there are airships, no airplanes. In these two books, the main character is Matt Cruse, a boy who is born in the air. "Skybreaker" tells about the spotting of a long-lost ship, "Hyperion". This leads on an entire search for the riches that could await them on the ship that disappeared forty years ago.
"Skybreaker" is full of action and suspense. In many ways, I could count this as one of the most exciting books that I have ever read.

A Classic Adventure- with a twist

OH man. I devoured this book is a few hours depsite its rather large size. I was so absorbed and the pages (get ready for a pun) flew by.

This book continues Matt Cruses saga. When it starts, he is serving as an intern on the airship Flotsam. The Flotsam gets blown off course and as it rises to heights untraveled, it discovers a 40-yr-old mystery: the location of the Hyperion, a ghost ship legended to have riches upon riches on board. Because of some complications, the Flotsam must end it's journey, but that doens't mean the journey ends for Matt Cruse. With the Hyperion's coordinates and thoughts of riches in mind, Matt Cruse along with the heiress Kate de Vries and a mysterious gypsy named Nadira, set out on a perilous journey.

I think this book maybe even better than Airborn. It was filled with the same swashbuckling action and ripping good adventure, and the romance between a certain cabin boy and young heiress grew even tenser. Now there was even a love-quadrangle of sorts with some other new characters thrown it. I think the character development was considerably better this time around, and we finally got some emotion from Mr. Cruse.

There is just something about these books I adore. They are fun and thrilling, and there is nothing about them that makes me groan in dismay. I think that why these books get five-stars. I'm sure they could be better, but there is nothing about them that I dislike. And the visuals are awesome. I've said it once and I'll say it again: these books would be GREAT movies.

If you any reluctant male readers, recommened these books to them. They appeal to a wide audience. Easy enough for middle school readers, but older readers will love them too. Both boys and girls.

Skybreaker

Matt Cruse, former cabin boy of the airship Aurora, continues his adventures in Skybreaker. Matt and his friend Kate discover the coordinates to a long lost ship, the Hyperion, which may contain gold, inventions, and a taxidermy display among other rumoured riches to be discovered.

One of the major obstacles is that the Hyperion is in Skyberia with high altitudes and cold temperatures making the salvage much more difficult. There are also the pirates to deal with...

This book was just as entertaining and unputdownable as Airborn. The action was fast and furious with many heartstopping moments. As an adult reader, I enjoyed the relationship between Matt and Kate which was interesting but kept at a level that will not lose younger readers interests. Looking forward to Starclimber!
