So Many Themes Packed in this Book!

My interpretation of this book is that it provides a timeless tale about a parent's self-sacrificing, unconditional love for a child..an imperfect child. Wonderful metaphor that works for me!!

JUST LOVED THIS BOOK!

WHAT A WONDERFUL STORY FOR LITTLE CHILDREN AND BIG ONES AS WELL. I CAN'T WAIT TO SHARE IT WITH MY GRANDCHILDREN.
A VERY SPECIAL STORY.

classic

I got this book as a tot around 1973. Each year I have read it and will never stop doing so. I don't have kids but if I did, this is one of the first books I would give them. I would probably put The Giving Tree in my newborn's crib along with some Beatles CDs.

I probably won't be having babies, at least not soon, but if you have babies, or tots, or pre teens, or a child about to get married, may I wholeheartedly suggest this as a gift.

This is a story about discontent and unconditional giving: a little boy grows into a man but is never happy. But he has one constant in his life: the giving tree, which gives him play, food, a place to smooze his girl a home, and finally, a stump to sit on

Obviously this is metephore and the tree could be a parent, a friend, even a lover: sitting rooted in stability while a boy growing into a young man into an old man searches for peace.

The implications are almost limitless and since this is a review and not a doctoral thesis--although I probably could do the coolest dissertation on The Giving Tree--I won't go into all the possible meanings and themes here.

But Shel Silverstein--by the way did you know he wrote lyrics for Dr. Hook-is clear as a bell with his writing here.

More important: in the 1970s, my grandma got me this book as an alternative to Jerry trying to electrocute Tom or Elmer trying to shoot Bugs.

I think now with mass media, vindictive real housewives, cutthroat top chiefs and our fascination with meanness in a post Sept 11th world. The Giving Tree's simple and timeless story--I know that sounds like promo copy, but it is absolutely accurate-is as important as ever.

And the best part is the last.

The Boy Was Happy.

"Once there was a tree . . . and she loved a little boy." So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein.

Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk . . . and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave.

This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein has created a moving parable for readers of all ages that offers an affecting interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another?s capacity to love in return.
