Surprisingly Great!

Such a surprisingly great book. Loved that there were so many true historical facts to go along with the story. What an interesting twist on the tale of Lincoln's life. Loved the "surprise" at the end. Definitely recommend!!

Great Idea, Decent Book

I was not interested in Seth Grahame-Smith's 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' but idea of Abraham Lincoln being a vampire hunter was quite interesting to me, as Lincoln is one of my favorite historical figures. To that end, the idea is quite fascinating and in general, well executed. My main problems are boiled down to thus: the narrator, who in the few pages he uses to his own story, was incredibly irritating; the plot occasionally jumps around so that you have to re-read it a few times in order to understand what place in time you are now in (this is a problem mostly in Lincoln's older years; it is more fluid in his youth); and last, the ending! It was completely out of character, in my opinion. Not of Henry's but of Lincoln's. Other than that, Grahame does a good job of making his idea believable, his characters speak and act appropriate to the time period, and it is a pretty good read.

Enjoyed..... Great, humorous reading if you are into Monters. Great for Teen reading but do not recommend for young readers.

not for the fact checker at heart

I bought this book because I like Lincoln, I liked the idea of his story having an unusual historical context, and thought it would be fun. I have not read any of the zombie/monster versions of classics which are getting more prominent. I wasn't sure what I would find, but I promised to keep an open mind.

I found the book to be a hokey for my tastes. Some of the items in the book just happen to appear out of convenience, and not because of practicality. For instance, the story jumps references between obviously-not-historically-real journal entries and seemingly-historically-real ones. I would have preferred it just stuck with the seemingly-historically-real ones because it would have deepened the intrigue. I don't know whether Lincoln kept journal entries, but I assume he did. Some of the relationships did not exist (like meeting Poe), or were distorted (Ann Rutledge being Lincoln's love).

It was also hard to picture Lincoln and a super athletic young man, but since most of what I know of him are from his Presidency, I didn't hold it against him. It's like watching the fight scene with Yoda in Episode II. It just didn't quite come off as smoothly as it could have. However, I thought the motivation for Lincoln was there.

One thing the book fails to capture is Lincoln's wit and humor. He is much too serious and focused on hunting. He was a man who said, "I laugh because I must not cry."

I didn't get the character arc. Lincoln is motivated by revenge. It would have been more interesting if he started off as someone who is self serving, but eventually sees the greater cause, and that's why he succeeds. Maybe I should think of it as a classic western novel, not a fantasy thriller.

Overall, it reads well. There may be a motion picture, and that may turn out to be well.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

This was a quick read. The book was fast paced and I liked the way the author placed historical information in this otherwise fictional tale. I would recommend this book to my friends.

Indiana, 1818. Moonlight falls through the dense woods that surround a one-room cabin where a nine-year-old Abraham Lincoln kneels at his dying mother's bedside. Only later will the grieving Abe learn that his mother's fatal affliction was actually the work of a vampire. Gifted with his legendary height, strength, and skill with an ax, Abe sets out on a path of vengeance that will lead him all the way to the White House.
