Back to "The Best of Ken Folliett"
How long I have waited. If you loved "Pillars of the Earth", you have probably been waiting for this book. All Ken's books are good, and I await each one, but this is his legacy. The time, place, and characters will live on in your mind. If you love deep historical fiction, you'll be glad he wrote this sequel. Now I wish he could write another "Eye of the Needle and "Key to Rebecca" What a great novelist!
Entertainment for its Own Sake
I loved this book. I loved the characters and plot, and I will reread it again sometime in the future. I was disappointed with some of the negative reviews that I read which claimed that the book - though "well researched" - was not historically accurate in its language or terminolgy. Who cares? This book was written about the 14th century, not for it; it was written for the audience of the 21st century, and to have a universal appeal to all kinds of readers.
I read "Pillars of the Earth" shortly after it first came out, then reread it when my local book discussion group chose it as our December 2009 selection. I loved it even more than the first time I read it, and read "
World
Without
End
" immediately after. It took about a week after I finished both to come out of the "Kingsbridge daze" I was in.
I think "World Without End" is even better than "Pillars" and that Follett's work has matured over the last two decades. His two 'good guys' in "Pillars" were lovable and human, but his two 'bad guys' in "WWE" are even more vivid and understandable, even if you love to hate 'em. Follett's comprehension of the psychological and sociological effects of war, politics, religion, famine, wide-spread contagion, and hopeless poverty deepen the reader's involvement with the characters' lives and interactions.
"World Without End" is a wonderful read, either on its own or as a sequel to "Pillars of the Earth."

1014 action-packed, juicy pages
An incredible book. 1014 action-packed, juicy pages that would keep you hanging on to your seat. There are multiple plots and sub-plots as well as numerous characters in this story. Historical facts such as the royalty, the wars, the effect of the plague etc.. make this story stunning. The politics and backwardness of the church, as well as the depravity practised by many under the guise of God are brought out in this story. Some of the most influential characters are women, making me suspect as I did in 'Pillars' that this author is indeed a feminist.
