THE GREATEST BOOK FOR DIRECTIRS EVER!
This book is great for anybody who wants to be
direct
or and who doesn't have a lot of experience.Whether

"
DAMN
"
movie
, this book is for you. It also helps you if you don't have a lot of money to make a movie.
Put your trust in the hands of Lloyd Kaufman...
When I was fourteen years old, my then boyfriend and I used his grandmother's video store membership to rent `Tromeo & Juliet', a Troma
film
direct
ed by Lloyd Kaufman. We ended up watching that
movie
at least twice a day for an entire summer... we never returned the tape (his grandmother is still on the run from Captain Video's goon squad). Risking his grandmother's name and good credit was worth it because until that point, I had never seen anything like `Tromeo & Juliet' and to this day, no other movie has had such a profound effect in the way that I came to think about movies. In the 15 + years that have passed since the first time I saw that film, I have watched lots of other Troma products, and there is one thing I have learned: Troma movies aren't always good movies, but they are always movies! And that is exactly why I have come to trust Mr. Kaufman and his "Make
Your
Own
Damn
Movie" ethic. Despite what you may think of Troma's films, there is no denying the fact that they are in this business for no other reason than an unadulterated love of film-making.
With "Direct Your Own Damn Movie" Mr. Kaufman offers a look into his creative process - warts, vomit, and all - in addition, he also collects wisdom from other visionary film makers, such as James Gunn (`Slither'), George Romero (`Night of the Living Dead'), Penelope Spheeris (`Wayne's World) and Eli Roth (well, they can't all be winners...). Kaufman's hilarious and off-beat humor make the book a quick and fun read, but do not be fooled, he is actually offering great advice for any independent film-maker wanna-be considering picking up the camera for the first time. There are a lot of key lessons to be learned from `Direct Your Own Damn Movie' and many are presented with real life anecdotes from Kaufman's own on-set experiences - sometimes chronicling how he may have been better off if he had in fact followed some of these rules. He covers all the important aspects of making a movie, beginning with the screenplay, hiring crew, casting, filming, and finally post-production - Mr. Kaufman doesn't just want to prepare you to "direct" your own damn movie, but to be a part of every aspect of what it takes (which for independent, low/no budget filmmakers is a necessity). But, perhaps the most important lesson that Uncle Lloydie expresses through his books is the encouragement to get out there and just... well... "MAKE YOUR OWN DAMN MOVIE"!!!
Lloyd Kaufman, president of Troma Entertainment, has been creating and helping to create and distribute and promote truly independent cinema for over 35 years! This book comes from a place of love - love of movies and the movie making process. Lloyd Kaufman, chairperson of the Independent Film & Television Alliance, knows that huge media conglomerates dictate what we can see on screen and television, and that truly the only way to stop it is to support and encourage independent film makers struggling to make their movies outside the Hollywood system. You can be that struggling film maker! Buy `Direct Your Own Damn Movie' and get started today! BUY TROMA!

Lloyd Kaufman's latest book a "Damn" good read.
Anyone can make their
own
movie
, especially with today's modern technology. But making a professional-looking movie on a modest budget, with underpaid actors and crew, and trying to get it out into the
film
market... that is a horse of a different color. Thankfully, we have an expert on how to make
your
own
damn
movie on the cheap. His name is Lloyd Kaufman, co-founder and president of Troma Entertainment. The folks that brought us Toxic Avenger, Class of Nuke 'em High, and their latest opus Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead. Lloyd and his mad cap movies have inspired such
direct
ors such as Peter Jackson and Quentin Tarantino to come out of the cinemas closet and become top names in Hollywood. He's even helped launch the careers of Trey Parker and Matt Stone (South Park) and countless other movie stars like Kevin Costner and Samuel L Jackson (although I doubt they would mention that in public). Previously, Lloyd made a book called Make Your Own Damn Movie. It offered plenty of information plus Troma's own insane humor laced within the pages. In his new book, Direct Your Own Damn Movie, we find out the last book only scratched the surface of breaking into the movie business.
First off, this is not entirely the same old stuff reprinted from Lloyd's first book Make Your Own Damn Movie. This covers a lot more information than the last book. It goes through the basics like assembling your cast and crew for little to no money at all (important tip: If you can't afford to pay them, you better supply some good food). But it also offers insightful advice on what equipment is needed, different types of camera shots, and some good common sense rules that are overlooked by first time movie makers. Once again, Lloyd brings us his twisted sense of humor plus his decades worth of experience to the table. The book also has columns from folks like Eli Roth (Cabin Fever, Hostel 1 & 2), Stan Lee (co-creator of Spider-Man, X-Men, and other Marvel characters), Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator), and Ron Jeremy (porn star and Troma actor, lets leave it at that). We even get advice from new up and coming filmmakers that were inspired by Lloyd and his films to make their own damn movies.
The one downside is that it doesn't cover more of the other aspect of movie making like getting the money needed for your project. But the good news is Lloyd is saving that plus other important information for his next book Produce Your Own Damn Movie. So keep your eyes peeled when that book hits shelves this year (hopefully).
If your going to purchase a book on how to direct your own independent movie, your best bet is to go with a name that has years of experience. Lloyd Kaufman has that in spades. Plus having Eli Roth in the book doesn't hurt. Direct Your Own Damn Movie gets five stars out of five.

I bought this book
direct
ly from Mr. Kaufman himself at the Crypticon convention in Houston. Not only was the author friendly and funny, the book itself is great. It's a fun read (the anecdotes about Troma
film
s alone are worth the price) and packed with useful information for first-time, low-budget filmmakers.
The book has invaluable advice for beginners, from basics like formatting
your
script and casting the film to Troma-specific info like what to do when your chicken zombie costume doesn't look right.
Based on this book, the follow-up, Produce Your
Own
Damn
Movie
, is definitely worth a look.

From experience, I can tell you that I learned more from Lloyd's books (Make Your Own Damn Movie and this one) than from any other source (outside of making my own damn movie) available.
It doesn't matter if you're looking to be Michael Bay or Andy Milligan, Lloyd's books are a one stop teaching tool for anyone who wants to fund, finance, direct, produce, act in or edit a motion picture.
Seriously, it's Lloyd Kaufman. 40 plus years of TRUE independent filmmaking experience. Lloyd is honest, hilarious, genuine and wickedly intelligent. There is NO reason, young filmmakers, that you shouldn't pick up this book.
Supplement it with All I Need To Know About Filmmaking I Learned From The Toxic Avenger, Make Your Own Damn Movie and Produce Your Own Damn Movie. You'll be making a film in NO TIME! Oh, and for proof that Lloyd's books indeed work, [...]
