Excellent book, should be given to parents when they receive the diagnosis

Dr. Offit is the voice of reason and every parent with a child on the specturm should read this book. We have a daughter who was diagnosed PDD-NOS in early 2005 at the age of almost 4 and we have seen tremendous progess in the last 4 and half years with ABA, RDI, speech therapy, HANDLE, and OT in addition to various after school activities she enjoys (music, swimming, tennis for now). We love her for who she is and she is happy. Our experience has inspired us to start an NPO to raise awareness and provide training to parents and professionals.

Unfortunately not everyone is in the same position or shares the same point of view. I'm sorry for them, but it's time to accept your child and do what's scientifically proven to help your child. There's a lot of people trying to profit from the misery. Knowledge is power and let science protect you.

Sorry for not saying more about the book, but thanks Dr. Offit for your work and the courage to stand against ignorance and exploitation.

Must read for parents

I won't repeat all the other 5 star reviews, just want to add that this is a PHENOMENAL book and should be read by all parents everywhere - especially those that would prefer to make their decision based on data rather than emotions.

Truth from a modern-day hero

Dr. Offit thoroughly discredits those medical professionals, journalists, celebrities and parents who continue to blame autism on MMR or thimerosal. Furthermore, he exposes those same people who continue to exploit the children and parents affected by autism with expensive, worthless and often dangerous treatments.

The world is round; we don't accommodate flat-earth believers by "teaching the controversy."

We don't yet know what causes autism. What we do know for certain is that the MMR vaccine and thimerosal play no part in the process. There is no controversy among honest scientists. Every dollar we spend on this false controversy will delay the day we find a real answer to this serious issue.

Thank you Dr. Offit for standing up and telling the truth.

A London researcher was the first to assert that the combination measles-mumps-rubella vaccine known as MMR caused autism in children. Following this "discovery," a handful of parents declared that a mercury-containing preservative in several vaccines was responsible for the disease. If mercury caused autism, they reasoned, eliminating it from a child's system should treat the disorder. Consequently, a number of untested alternative therapies arose, and, most tragically, in one such treatment, a doctor injected a five-year-old autistic boy with a chemical in an effort to cleanse him of mercury, which stopped his heart instead.

Children with autism have been placed on stringent diets, subjected to high-temperature saunas, bathed in magnetic clay, asked to swallow digestive enzymes and activated charcoal, and injected with various combinations of vitamins, minerals, and acids. Instead of helping, these therapies can hurt those who are most vulnerable, and particularly in the case of autism, they undermine childhood vaccination programs that have saved millions of lives. An overwhelming body of scientific evidence clearly shows that childhood vaccines are safe and does not cause autism. Yet widespread fear of vaccines on the part of parents persists.

In this book, Paul A. Offit, a national expert on vaccines, challenges the modern-day false prophets who have so egregiously misled the public and exposes the opportunism of the lawyers, journalists, celebrities, and politicians who support them. Offit recounts the history of autism research and the exploitation of this tragic condition by advocates and zealots. He considers the manipulation of science in the popular media and the courtroom, and he explores why society is susceptible to the bad science and risky therapies put forward by many antivaccination activists.
