Beautiful, Haunting, Nostalgic

When I ordered Bill Jacobson: Photographs the Rocky Schenck book was automatically recommended by Amazon. I am so glad it was.

These images are simply haunting and beautiful, a kind of nostalgia for a memory you've never had.

Highest recommendation.

Beautiful presentation...

Rocky Schenck is a gifted photographer, the images within this book are dark, moody, melancholy, and hard to take your eyes away from. Schenck has been a long-time influence in my own work, so I was excited with this purchase. Just be aware that this book is 99% images, with very little explained about the artists inspirations or techniques. I was hoping to find a little more insight into his processes...BUT, this book is still a keeper. Keep it up Rocky!

gorgeous book

As an owner of one of Rocky Schenck's photographs, I was thrilled when I saw that there is a book published that is dedicated solely to his phtography. And what a book it is! This beautiful book, documenting Rocky's work from the mid ninties through the present, is a work of art in and of itself. Since the price was so reasonable I never expected such high quality production. The paper used is perfect, as it has a great "hand" and a subtle glossiness. Each plate has it's own page as well it should for a book of photographs. Rocky Schenck's work is just so beautiful! Even if you are not familiar with his dreamlike and brilliant compositons you would be safe to treat yourself to this book sight unseen.

Excellent work

Excellent work from a photographer not known enough in Europe. Only seen in real, by me, in Paris-Photo fair. A book to have, for argentic pictures lovers, fond of plastician photographs.

Rocky is Brilliant

Rocky is one of the most interesting fine art photographers at work today. While there is a little of the turn-of-the-century Pictorialist sensibility in these pictures, he warps that tradition in sophisticated and surprising ways. In addition, he shows how powerful suggested narrative can be in the right hands. Stories are everywhere in these images--but the photographer leaves them open-ended, the mystery intact. This is work that gives one hope for contemporary fine art photography.

"Each photograph is like a still taken from a movie that exists not on film but rather in one's memory, with all the fuzziness typical of remembered impressions. The viewer, willing or not, fills in the frames that precede and follow it.... When confronted by such compelling and seductive images, the viewer can hardly help but respond reflexively, amplifying, expanding, and otherwise making the photograph his own. This compulsion to respond, together with the lovely elegiac mood in all his work, is the real power of Schenck's photographs."

?John Berendt, from the Foreword

Remembered movies... images from a dream... scenes from another world?the photographs of Rocky Schenck are endlessly evocative, though the photographer asserts that "my approach is rather simple: I record on film what I see and what I feel as I travel through life." Still, these haunting images are no mere reproductions of everyday reality. By manipulating both the film's negative and the print's surface, Schenck creates images that are "illustrations of my conscious (and perhaps subconscious) dreams, emotions, and longings.... When I shoot these images, they are usually not premeditated or contrived.... I simply take my camera with me where I go and try to remain open to whatever life shoves... or gently places... in front of me."

This volume is the first book-length publication of Rocky Schenck's photography. The images range from human spaces?hotel rooms, store windows, lobbies, living rooms, even information booths?to natural places?oceans, lakes, forests, fields, and roadways?he encountered on trips through North America, Europe, and Mexico. For all their variety, however, Schenck's images form a coherent whole. Like lost scenes from a silent movie, they suggest bits of a story set in a vaguely threatening landscape in which loneliness and alienation are offset by moments of pure beauty. Refusing easy resolutions, Rocky Schenck never quite closes the story, leaving viewers to navigate their own way back to the daylight world.

Accompanying the images is an appreciative foreword by John Berendt, author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and a collector of Schenck's work. Connie Todd's introduction links Schenck's work with the nineteenth-century pictorial tradition and twentieth-century modernism and also provides a brief biography of the photographer.
