Contemplative

The kind of book that is not read as a novel. Instead one reads it slowly; it speaks to our soul.

Peace is here and now

This is a simple, easy to read, down-to earth book about how to achieve peace in our individual lives and thus in the world as a whole through learning to be in the now.

I usually try to rush through the various books I read, but that was not possible with this book, as the author's wise words calmed me, slowed me down and brought me into the now.

The book is composed of short passages, which makes for enjoyable, relaxed reading. Thich Nhat Hanh advises us about how to obtain mindfulness in various everyday circumstances, for example, while eating, walking, in connection with answering the phone, driving and while mowing grass with a scythe.

He advises us that there is no path to peace, peace is the path. Each of us must achieve peace here and now with our smile, words and actions. Everything we want is right here in the moment.

The key to mindfulness is attention to our breathing. He also includes useful advice about how to cope with our anger through a walking meditation.

We should refrain from watching violent TV-programmes, since we become what we focus on.

The author's love for humanity and all of life pervades the pages of the book, which includes a poem he himself wrote that helps us understand how we are all connected, are all one.

Much more could be said about this enlightening book, but read it for yourself. I highly recommend it. It really deserves the five stars I have given it. Read it in small portions.

must have for every person

This is probably the 9th copy of this book I have purchased! Most of my entire wedding ceremony speech and vows came from it. I give it to everyone special to me, especially when they are having a hard time finding peace in the moment. This book is amazing. Never read it cover to cover, and never read too many of the very short and simple passages at one time. Just read one or two and soak them in all day long. Find a chapter that relates to you in the moment, or just open to a random page. Everything he writes is written so simply and to average people. You don't have to decipher complicated, wordy sentences to comprehend his simple sounding, yet so easy to forget, every day concepts. Wherever you are in your life, no matter how hard it seems, or doesn't make sense- only you can control how it effects you. People you don't like or those who seem to hurt you, only you can control how they get to you. It's not a direct self-help book like a psychologist would write, but rather a guide to living mindfully and in total awareness. Something every person could benefit to learn.

a great guide to living a life of peace and joy

Of the many books of Buddhist philosophy I have read, this is the best one. Not bogged down in dogma or the minutia of it, but just a clear and simple path to having peace in your life. simple steps you can use every day that let you realize the beauty that is all around.

good

I thought the product was in good condition, and came reasonably fast. I was satisfied.

In the rush of modern life, we tend to lose touch with the peace that is available in each moment. Zen master, peace activist and author Thich Nhat Hanh shows us how to make positive use of the very situations that usually pressure and antagonize us. For him, a ringing telephone can be a signal to call us back to our true selves. Dirty dishes, red lights and traffic jams are spiritual friends on the path to "mindfulness" - the process of keeping our consciousness alive to our present experience and reality. The most profound satisfactions, the deepest feelings of joy and completeness lie as close at hand as our next aware breath and the smile we can form right now. Thich Naht Hahn offers commentaries and meditations, personal anecdotes and stories to show how deep meditative presence is available. He provides exercises to increase our awareness of our own body and mind through conscious breathing - and he also shows us how to be aware of our relationships with others and of the world around us, its beauty as well as its pollution and injustices.
