Great Book

This book is a great read and a must have for anyone interested in learning from a true Great modern day illustrator. Mr. Gurney is best known as the illustrator and writer/creator of the Dinotopia Book series, however he has done many works both historical and fantacy. The book features many examples of his work and how he came to arrive at his conclusions. I enjoyed the book very much and would recommend it to anyone interested in Art that is rooted in fantastic worlds and imagination.

A Must Have

A great book for letting you see the process of how to get the most out of your painting.

Totally Recommended!

I bought this for my boyfriend who just graduated from art school this past May. I was a little skeptical since he's pretty picky about what he thinks are "good" art books, but I knew he was a big fan of James Gurney, so I bought it for him as a present. He loves it! He references it often for his fantasy work. I totally recommend it, especially for fantasy artists.

Treasure trove of ideas

This book was truly inspiring! The book isn't a beginners drawing book, but rather starts by assuming the reader can already draw from life. It then proceeds to show how you can go from there to designing paintings of things that don't exist. It shows many techniques for achieving this, like building models from clay or maquettes. The number of subjects are too many to mention here. There is no second book like it!

Excellent resource.

Very helpful, with good tips to draw and paint what you see in your own imagination. There are many books that tell you how to draw from life, or how to draw THEIR designs and images, but this is the first I have found that really helps to draw your own way.

An award-winning fantasy artist and the creator of Dinotopia, James Gurney instructs and inspires in Imaginative Realism: How to Paint What Doesn't Exist. Renowned for his uncanny ability to incorporate amazing detail and imagination into stunningly realistic fantasy settings, James Gurney teaches budding artists and fans of fantasy art step-by-step the techniques that won him worldwide critical acclaim. This groundbreaking work examines the practical methods for creating believable pictures of imaginary subjects, such as dinosaurs, ancient Romans, alien creatures, and distant worlds.

Beginning with a survey of imaginative paintings from the Renaissance to the golden Age of American illustration, the book then goes on to explain not just techniques like sketching and composition, but also the fundamentals of believable world building including archaeology, architecture, anatomy for creatures and aliens, and fantastic engineering. It concludes with details and valuable advice on careers in fantasy illustration, including video game and film concept art and toy design.

More than an instruction book, this is the ultimate reference for fans of science fiction and fantasy illustration.
