Team of Rivals
This is a long read but well worth it for the amount of history it contains. This isn't
Lincoln
gossip. It's a look at how Lincoln thought and worked. I had been a Lincoln fan, but, after this book, I felt I understood his presidency and its burdens more thoroughly and admired him in a whole new way.
Inspiring and Well-researched
This is one of those books you will pick up and learn so much that you regret that it has to end. I am not a history buff or a
Lincoln
fan, but I was so moved by the greatness and character of Lincoln that I wish I read about him before. His kindness, patience,
political
skill, ambition, and moral bearings was so impressive that you wonder why we don't study more about him in our schools.
There was so much detail and personal information about the man and where he came from, his family, his political career, speeches, his
rivals
(of course) etc that you become swept into history when reading this book.
This was my first book about Lincoln and I definitely recommend it for anyone desiring to learn about one of America's greatest presidents.

Best Book I Ever Read About Lincoln!
You know, I'm not going to spoil it for you. I was born on
Lincoln
s birthday, and I read biographies and Civil War books about this man as a hobby.
What makes this book different? Well, let me explain how typical authors write books in the past. They consider themselves "good writers", thinking their style is THE key. So they read other writers work as their sources, and then write the biography. Hence they repeat the same tired mistakes and misrepresentations.
But there is a NEW breed these past 2 decades of writers to whom that isn't good enough. Good writing isn't enough, you need spot on sourcing. In this, Doris Kearns Goodwin does thorough research. Some of the best I've read. First sources like letters from surrounding family members of secretaries to cross check individual accounts of events and she points out some of the discrepancies as well.
What makes this so illuminating about Lincoln is that it's really a number of Biographies that tie in together.
NEVER have I read about the Lincoln-Steward relationship in such detail and so revealingly. And after reading dozens and dozens of books about Lincoln, I found myself learning new things by the pail full about Lincoln, his administration, his relationships, and his leadership style. Instead of "another" book about Lincoln, this is more like THE book about Lincoln.
This so richly deserves it's Pulitzer Prize, because this book is nothing short of Brilliant.
To put it another way, it's the "Godfather" of Lincoln Books.

A different approach to a Lincoln biography
a
Lincoln
biography not just about Lincoln. A great insight into the folks he gathered around him and his ability to meld a group of high strung men, most of whom wanted his job, into the highly efficient
team
that managed the Civil War. Hard to put down.
Great
I am so glad another Lincold admirer suggested reading this book and I am glad I bought my copy from Amazon. Really fine book; quick delivery ... I am very satisfied with my purchase.
This brilliant multiple biography is centered on
Lincoln
's mastery of men and how it shaped the most significant presidency in the nation's history.
