One of those rare occasions when a Disney sequel is actually good

Let's face it. Disney sequels will never be as great as the originals (take Peter Pan & The Jungle Book, for example). However, there are only two sequels that I find surprisingly good: The Rescuers Down Under and this, The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride. Now, The Lion King was one of those Disney films that played a big part of my childhood. Actually, I think this is the one that I loved the most when I was a kid (along with the original Fantasia). So when I heard that there was going to be another Lion King four years later, I didn't know what to expect. I didn't know whether or not it would stink. I saw it at least twice now, and it's certainly not as great as the original, but it's not bad either. This is still a satisfying experience, and it was great to see the characters once again. The new characters (Kiara, Kovu, Zira, etc.) are really likable, though I do wish they didn't steal much of Simba and Nala's screen time. The songs aren't very memorable this time around, but they are still nice to listen to. And I don't mind the new voice for Zazu: if it at least sounds the same, then I'm not complaining. Finally, I've noticed that Simba's Pride is slightly darker than the original. There's a bit more cruelty and hostility between heroes and the villains. Just like the first movie, this one is quite raw and intense.

Overall, I still prefer the first Lion King, but Simba's Pride is still a satisfying sequel, and it deserves to be admired by all Lion King fans.

Grade: B+

Not great, but still pretty good

I'm a 21-year-old Lion King fan. I still adore the first film, and I enjoyed the sequel when it first came out. Maybe it's because I'm a guy, or maybe it's because the kid at heart is growing up too fast, but after watching the film a few days ago, I didn't like it as much. Unfortunately, the more I watch, the more evident the reasons become. Here are a few reasons:

1) There's not much of a story. At the end of the first film, everything was wrapped up without loose ends. It was the perfect ending: justice triumphs, the wrongs are made right, and they all live happily ever after. "Simba's Pride" takes place in the "happily ever after," and the warm fuzzies don't come at the end of a battle that leaves you on the edge of your seat. The conflict here does shape up to be intense, but at its peak, it's ended by talking things out--which actually works.

2) The characters aren't well-developed. As cubs, Kiara and Kovu got very little screen time. The movie's supposed to focus on them, but the real tension comes between Simba and Kovu's mother, Zira. As a result, Kiara and Kovu are caught in the crosshairs, and they don't get a chance to grow and show us who they really are. Even the main characters lost their power and intensity, especially Simba. He went from strong leader to poor parent, and even though he's not Mufasa, we never got a chance to see who he really is as king.

3) The music is weak. This is another disappointment because the music helped make the first film as magical as it was. In "Simba's Pride," it sounded like a canned soundtrack--complete with an electric guitar and fretless bass to boot. The pieces with lyrics range from over-the-top ("Upendi") to sappy ("Love Will Find a Way") to senseless ("Zira's Lullaby"). The song "Deception, Disgrace" is one of the saga's best songs, but it comes after an hour of fairly mediocre material.

"Lion King" is one of those rarities--a masterpiece that gets better with age. Any sequels that follow have extraordinary standards to reach. Despite my issues with it, I definitely think "Simba's Pride" met some of those standards. It kept a cast of characters that continued to be cute and cool. Matthew Broderick still made Simba come to life, and Kiara and Kovu grew on me as the film went on. Plus, they kept the original cast and breathtaking storyworld; there was very little that they actually changed, which counts for a lot.

Still, the story and the characters weren't as strong as they could have been, which made all the difference between a classic and a cartoon. If they were better-developed, I think the movie could have been on the level of the original. I still recommend "Simba's Pride" to anyone who loves the saga; by far, it's Disney's best sequel--certainly better than what it's putting out these days. It may not have won over as many fans as the first, but it's a film you can show kids with confidence--and if you're a kid at heart, you'll likely want to come along for the ride, too.

Another made-for-video sequel to a Disney masterpiece. As with the Beauty and the Beast and Pocahontas sequels, most of the recognizable vocal talents return, creating a worthwhile successor to the highest-grossing animated film ever. We pick up the story as the lion king, Simba (voiced by Matthew Broderick), and Nala (Moira Kelly) have a new baby cub, a girl named Kiara (Neve Campbell). Like her father before, she seeks adventure and ends up outside the Pridelands, where lions loyal to the evil Scar (who died in the original) have lived with revenge in their hearts. The leader, Zira (a spunky turn from Suzanne Pleshette), schemes to use her son Kovu (Jason Marsden) to destroy Simba. As luck with have it, Kiara has bumped into Kovu and fallen in love.

This all sounds familiar since all of Disney's straight-to-video sequels have played it very safe, nearly repeating the originals' story, tone, and pace. Perhaps there were too many cooks for this production. Besides the two screenplay credits, there are eight other writers credited for additional written material. The look of the film has none of the surprise of the original but is far superior to other animated videos. In fact, the film played in European theaters.

For kids, the sequel will be a favorite. The comic antics of Timon (Nathan Lane) and Pumba (Ernie Sabella) are enjoyable, as is Andy Dick as Nuka, the mixed-up older son of Zira. And there's plenty of action. The best element is the music. Relying on more African-influenced music, the five songs featured are far superior to those in Disney's other sequels. Zira's song of revenge, "My Lullaby," was cowritten by Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon. The standout opening number, "He Lives in You," was created for the Lion King Broadway smash and now finds a whole new audience. --Doug Thomas
