MUST READ for children of all ages, even BIG, OLDER PEOPLE

Even though it is a children's book, it is hands down, one of the best baseball books of all-time! We need more opportunities like this to honor the incredible heroes of America's Negroe League Baseball. Get a front row seat and peek into the dugout of an important part of America's pastime and history. Illustrations pop off the page! Multiple award winner will not collect dust on your shelves as you are likely to share with readers of all ages.

The Negro League Baseball History you don't want to miss!

Illustrator and first time author, Kadir Nelson brings us this magnificent book on the story of Negro League Baseball. As long as there has been baseball in America, there have been African-American ballplayers. Rube Foster was the founder of the Negro National League and said of his men, "We are the ship: all else the sea." On February 20, 1920, Rube Foster called together the owners of African-American baseball teams and the Negro National League was formed. This book is jam packed with information and facts about the men who played the sport, the hardships they faced, including the low pay and the dangers of playing in the South, and also, the great plays, crazy rules, and the stars that broke out. I have a new respect for the players in the Negro League after reading this book because of things like, "...throwing at a batter was common. The pitcher would knock you down just to mess with your head. Look up at the umpire, and he'd just say, "Get up and play ball, son." That's why the batting helmet was invented." The book climaxes with Jackie Robinson making it into Major League Baseball, thus the end of the Negro League, but Nelson's story will leave a lasting impression with you.

Beautiful Book for Baseball Fans

I don't like the title much but the book is a real beauty. It is as compelling as an adult read as it is for the YA bunch. And the illustrations are worthy of a museum exhibit. There is no pandering. It is sweaty and hard ball baseball history. Having read the book I feel I have a basic understanding of the Negro League baseball history.

Know the history

A large format book with large clear illustrations giving a history of how hard it was to break the color barrier in baseball. The US is very different today, certainly in civil rights and very definitely in racial integration of sports. It's good to let kids know this wasn't always the case. A nicely done history of baseball.

"We are the ship; all else the sea."--Rube Foster, founder of the Negro National League

The story of Negro League baseball is the story of gifted athletes and determined owners; of racial discrimination and international sportsmanship; of fortunes won and lost; of triumphs and defeats on and off the field. It is a perfect mirror for the social and political history of black America in the first half of the twentieth century. But most of all, the story of the Negro Leagues is about hundreds of unsung heroes who overcame segregation, hatred, terrible conditions, and low pay to do the one thing they loved more than anything else in the world: play ball. Using an "Everyman" player as his narrator, Kadir Nelson tells the story of Negro League baseball from its beginnings in the 1920s through its decline after Jackie Robinson crossed over to the majors in 1947. The voice is so authentic, you will feel as if you are sitting on dusty bleachers listening intently to the memories of a man who has known the great ballplayers of that time and shared their experiences. But what makes this book so outstanding are the dozens of full-page and double-page oil paintings--breathtaking in their perspectives, rich in emotion, and created with understanding and affection for these lost heroes of our national game.

We Are the Ship is a tour de force for baseball lovers of all ages.
