Connected with me for sure!

"Everyone Communicates Few Connect" by John Maxwell is a wonderful book. I had the opportunity to read it while it was being written as John shared this book in his blog on his website one chapter every week for eleven weeks. He took peoples feedback and incorporated those into this book. He also asked people who commented on this subject to submit their photos to be included in the book. I am excited to say that I am one of those people who read the blogs as they were posted and my name was mentioned and my picture was also published in this book.

John writes that he learned how to connect well with people and that is one of his greatest strengths. This is absolutely true and he connected with me for sure through this book.

He writes that connecting with people is the foundational part of his leadership and writes that he is learning to connect with people using the new technologies. He put the manuscript of this book "Everyone Communicates Few Connect" in his blog on his website to connect with people on this subject and to get their input and feedback. Maxwell says that his blog received more than 100,000 views during the eleven weeks.

Maxwell writes that everyone talks. Everyone communicates. But a few connect. Those who do connect take their relationships, their work and their lives to another level. He states that there is good news for people who want to learn how to connect and by that become more effective in everything they do. He writes that even if connecting with others is something that you are not good at today you can learn how to do it and become better in doing it.

John writes that "Connecting can make you or break you". People cannot succeed without communicating effectively. It is not enough to work hard. It is not enough to do a great job. To be successful one needs to learn how to really communicate with others. Connecting is the ability to identify with people and related to them in a way that increases your influence with them. Connecting begins when other person feels valued.

John Maxwell takes the readers through the Five Connecting Principles and the Five Connecting Practices. I personally noticed that all of these principles and practices are absolutely true to connect with people effectively.

Part 1: Connecting Principles
1. Connecting Increases Your Influence in Every Situation
2. Connecting Is All About Others
3. Connecting Goes Beyond Words
4. Connecting Always Requires Energy
5. Connecting Is More Skill than Natural Talent

Part 2: Connecting Practices
6. Connectors Connect on Common Ground
7. Connectors Do the Difficult Work of Keeping It Simple
8. Connectors Create an Experience Everyone Enjoys
9. Connectors Inspire People
10. Connectors Live What They Communicate

At the end of every chapter, there is a section that is dedicated to "Connecting with people at all levels". In this part John writes about that particular connecting principle about its "Connecting Practice" and the "Key Concept" related to that chapter. In this section he also writes about how to be "Connecting one-on-one", "Connecting in a group" and also about "Connecting with an audience".

Like any other books by John Maxwell, there are a lot of inspiring quotations listed in this book and I love reading them. "To be successful in the long run, you need to do more than connect. You need to keep connecting, and you can do that only when you live what you communicate". How true!!

This is another great book by John Maxwell and he connected with me for sure. This book will help in connecting effectively in any kind of profession. As a person working in Information Technology I found this book to be very useful when working with people at various levels and also at the personal level. I strongly recommend everyone to read this book if you are interested in communicating and connecting with people effectively.

Thomas Nelson provided me with a complimentary copy of "Everyone Communicates, Few Connect" by John C.Maxwell. Opinions expressed are my own and not those of Thomas Nelson.

Everyone communicates, few connect.. Which one are you?

With the social network world as big as its ever been you would think there were great connecting going on. But author John Maxwell in his book, Everyone communicates few connect thinks differently. And I agree. I have a twitter accout, facebook account & a myspace, along with plenty of other "social" accounts. But out of them all how many people am I really connecting with? I have recieved this book free with [...] to do a blog post entry.

I am a youth pastor that find this book very helpful to not only communicate but connect with the young people of this generation. This book has helped me be able to connect on a common ground and understand its all about others. We need to communicate with the other person in mind. I recommend this book to people looking to really make connections when they speak or react with other people. And also because I'm on the cover..haha

Helping Me Connect Better To Others

First of all Thomas Nelson provided me with a complimentary copy of this book to read and review and I found it VERY interesting and motivating! John C. Maxwell gave great real-world examples in this book that ANYONE can use to better communicate and connect with the people around them; whether in business or in our own marriages and families. The strategies that he presented are pretty straight-forward and are things that we can all do. As he pointed out in the book, connecting with people can be learned and is not something that just happens automatically or comes naturally. I loved the way he made it sound so simple and I've been trying out some of these strategies already and have seen some results. As a teacher, I am given ample opportunities to connect with people ALL DAY LONG from my students, to my colleagues, to my supervisors and I think this book is really going to help me improve myself in my career, as well as in my ability to connect and communicate effectively with those around me at home, church, and in my community. I'm excited about trying out these strategies and would definitely recommend this book to others. It is easy to read and very enjoyable too!

Good but not great

The first book I read this summer was a title by John Maxwell called Everyone Communicates, Few Connect. In this book, Maxwell set out to explain how it is possible to connect with people. Unfortunately, I must say that he did a poor job of connecting with his audience.

In terms of being a professionally done book, this title didn't disappoint. It had all of the anecdotes that you're looking for that teach you how to apply a concept to real life. It was fairly well written (though it seems clear to me that Maxwell is a better speaker than writer). So what was wrong with it? Maxwell didn't connect with me. I don't know how much you can connect with a person through writing, but other authors seem to captivate me, so I don't understand why a book about connecting failed to connect with me.

The principles in the book are good, and that's why I'd give this book a 3/5 rating. I would recommend it to people who are familiar with Maxwell and like his writing, but if you're not familiar with him, I don't think that this would be a good introduction, and I don't think it's near the potential that he's got. I'll have to read another one of his books before passing judgment.

Helpful- Surprisingly

One thing I have always told my girlfriends when giving advice about talking to the men in their family was if it is important enough to talk about, then it needs to be heard. Meaning, you have to say what you need to be heard in a way that the Martians, errrr, I mean men can understand. In their little Martian language. Face it, no one wants to walk away from a conversation and feel like they haven't been heard. This book was surprisingly beneficial to me in learning how to do that. I wondered if it would be a book geared mostly to business principles. It is, but the logic is that businesses are made up of what? ....you guessed it- people. Learning to speak in a way that connects with a room full of people or with one special friend while sitting and having tea is something that can be learned.
John gives 5 Principles that will connect you with the listener. In truth, he teaches you cannot be selfish and be heard. Connecting is all about others (chapter 2). How very true. Connecting requires energy (chapter 4). Also true. Which is most likely why our connecting moments can be so rare.
Then John moves into 5 Practices of connecting. This is where he gives you ways to apply what you learned in the previous chapters.
My favorites about this book:

Little quotes in boxes scattered all over. I love quotes. I love little boxes on pages that feel like gifts within the text. These were great quotes and I am copying some into my journal.
Every chapter ends with a key concept. I like it when a chapter sums it up.
Connecting with 1 on 1 tips, with a group, and with an audience. Fantastic points and how-tos.

As an adult, I see the value of this book and I enjoyed the kick in the pants to focus and put some energy into connecting with people, those I love....those within my business world.....and those I am witnessing to. This is a fantastic tool to learn from.

I do heartily recommend the book for high school students learning to speak publically. I believe it would be a fantastic resource for a speech class or for those whose mission in life would require public speaking on any level.

Good job, John C. Maxwell. You actually took a boring subject and put it in a slightly despised category (self help) for me and gave me a good read.

The world's most respected leadership expert gives five principles and five practices for breaking the invisible barrier to leadership and personal success.

You have a good idea but can't convince your peers of its merit. You crafted a groundbreaking strategy, but the team trudges on in the same old way. Certain people move forward in their career while you seem to be stuck. If this describes you or someone you know, the problem is not the quality of what you have to offer. The problem is how you connect with people to create the results you desire.

In Everyone Communicates, Few Connect, John Maxwell takes readers through the Five Connecting Principles and the Five Connecting Practices of top-notch achievers. He believes that a person's ability to create change and results in any organization-be it a company, church, nonprofit, or even a family-is directly tied to the ability to use the teachings of this book.
