Pulls You In

Alisa Stewart's family life is falling to pieces. Her marriage is on the verge of divorce and one of her sons, Kurt, became a drug addict after his older brother died.

Then the police show up at her door.

She initially believes that her son has died, but instead the police are looking for him in connection with a recent murder. However, Kurt recently checked into rehab and is turning his life around ~ he couldn't be involved...could he?

As facts begin to surface, Alisa isn't sure what to think and believe anymore. If she shares what she knows, she could lose Kurt ~ but is that more important than losing her son?

My Thoughts

When I first picked up Leaving Yesterday by Kathryn Cushman, I didn't think it would be one that I would enjoy, but I was quickly pulled into the storyline, wondering how things would be resolved.

The book presented some interesting scenarios that really made me think and wonder how I would respond in the same situations. Overall it was a great read and one that I would recommend ~ not your normal `light read' , but definitely a good one!

What Would You Do?

It's a mother's worst nightmare. Knowing that your child has gone into a world you cannot rescue them from and know nothing about. All you can do is sit by and watch while your child, seemingly throws their life away. Then what happens when you are confronted by a situation that could end what little progress they've made. What do you do?

Author Kathryn Cushman tackles this very question. She has been forced to watch her son's life spiral out of control into a world so dark that it doesn't look like he'll ever survive. Just when it seems like he is getting his life together, she is confronted with evidence of an even greater evil.

How would you react? Would you keep the correct moral idea or would you do whatever it took to shield your child. Alisa Stewart is faced with just such a dilemma, and while it's easy to look at the situation from the outside and say with certainty what you would do, Ms. Cushman does an excellent job at getting inside the situation and making you actually go through this nightmarish situation with the main character.

I will admit I was a bit skeptical when I opened the book and saw the author had written in 1st person. I really struggle with this type of book as I very rarely can identify with the main character in that way; however, I was quickly pulled into the story and could very easily put myself in Alisa's shoes.

I would highly recommend that you give this book a try. It makes for great reading, while teaching you something you probably didn't know about yourself.

Not your average Christian read

It all starts when Alisa Stewart looked up and saw a police officer pull up to her house. She just knows that her remaining son Kurt, is dead, just like his brother. But when the officer starts questioning her about her son Kurt she realizes his life of drug addiction has not claimed his life~yet. Kurt is wanted for for questioning in a murder of a local drug dealer. A few weeks later her son calls her from a rehab center where he has decided to change his life for good.

However for Alisa that is the only bright thing in her life. Alisa and her husband are separated and then she makes a decision that may change not only her life forever but also Kurt, her husband, and their 10 year old daughter.

This book is different from any other book I have ever read. I am still trying to decide if I like it or not. I do not agree with what Alisa did and was appalled she did what she did. As a mother I would have taken a different road and made different choices. The writing is good and I wanted to keep reading it until I found out what happened to Alisa and her family.

Leaving Yesterday Review

I read the book Leaving Yesterday by Kathryn Cushman. When a police car shows up in front of Alisa Stewarts home, she fears the worst. That her son Kurt is dead, lost forever to addiction. She lost her other son as well, and because she lost touch with Kurt for over a year, she only has her ten year old daughter Caroline left. But, the police officer is just trying to get information on the murder of a man Kurt once knew. Alisa knew that Kurt couldn't have possibly murdered the man...right? Her boy has changed, he didn't deserve to be brought back to his past. Alisa becomes crushed with an impossible choice: keep silent and keep her son...or risk everything in a quest for the truth?

I would rate this book four out of five stars. The story line was very good and it was a quick book to read. I also loved the Christian views in the book. However, at some points in the book, it was very hard to get through. Those points in the book do go by fast, and the books begins to pick up speed again. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially people seeking some inspiration. Overall, Leaving Yesterday was a great read!

Leaving Yesterday

One of the most appealing aspects of this book for me was the originality of the story. And this was an original story, but the message is very simple and one we cannot hear too much. The overall message is that our sins have consequences and our sins do not just affect us, they affect everyone around us. It is so important to trust God to help us make the right choices and help us when we have made mistakes. Kathryn has delivered this message through Alisa's story in a beautiful way. Although, I do think the end was a bit too tidy for reality, but that is what makes this fiction and that is what makes this inspirational.

Leaving Yesterday has a little bit of everything that I enjoy in a good story. It has some suspense, some romance, and a lot of inspiration from the Word of God. Alisa was just an average, ordinary mom trying to protect her family after being ripped apart by tragedy. Her unconditional love for Kurt could be felt right from the dramatic beginning. This book is a fast read with enough momentum to keep the pages turning right from the start. It is a book about acceptance, love, forgiveness, and above all, trusting God to get us through when life is out of control.

A Powerful Drama of a Mother's Unfailing Love

Alisa Stewart feels like she's lost two sons: her youngest to a terrible tragedy and her eldest, Kurt, to a life ruined by addiction. But now Kurt has checked himself into rehab and found a healing faith that seems real. It's like he's been raised from the dead. But then a detective arrives at Alisa's door asking questions about a murder--the death of a drug dealer before Kurt entered rehab. Alisa fears losing her son again, and when she finds evidence linking him to the killing, she destroys it. Her boy is different now. He's changed and deserves a second chance. But when another man is charged with the crime, Alisa finds herself facing an impossible choice: be silent and keep her son or give up everything for the truth.
