The perfect first "big" novel for a young person
I was surprised by another reviewer giving this book one star for a rape scene. I've read it many times and do not recall anything like that. I was very careful about the reading material I gave my kids, even as they were teens.
Christy
was the first big novel I had my daughter read when she was about twelve.
Catherine Marshall is a well known Christian author who only wrote two fiction books (Christy and I believe the other one was called Julia). The rest were about living the Christian life. She would never include anything like that in a book.
This is one of my all time favorite books. I especially like this edition since it contains a lot of information about the "real" Christy (Marshall's mother) and insight into how it was written.

why I bought Christy
After watching the
Christy
series on a library tape...to my dismay they ended it before Christy has typhoid and finds she loves the doctor....so I bought the book again just to read the final section which I found to be one of the most romantic I've read....beautifully written.....so thats my review.....Elaine
GREAT Book!
I am halfway through this book, and like most of the books that I love, I want to know more, lots more, about this remarkable woman. The dialogue is very interesting and it's a rare glimpse into a culture that I know about, but don't truly know. Fascinating story. And, it's well written on top of it. Nary a typo, so far. I'm spellbound. Highly recommend!

One of my top 5 favorites!
Do not decide to read this book based on the book jacket picture! Absolutely corny picture. Thank goodness I received an old version of the book with a different cover. And another thing, ugh! Do not watch the movie, Please! I could tolerate no more than 5 minutes of it, after which I threw the DVD across the room. Just kidding. I did turn it off though.
There are stories that are unforgettable. This is one of them. I learned a lot in this book about many different things such as the life of a teacher in the Appalachians, quiet wisdom and Christian charity. I read each word and savored the storyteller's art. This book reminded me a lot of a book called, "The Harvester". Although they are different in many ways, they are similar in many fine and nobel ways. After reading either story, "
Christy
" or "The Harvester," you are profoundly glad to have learned to read. It's a gift to read stories such as these.

The Questioning of Faith
Christy
is a young teacher who goes into the Appalachian Mountains to teach. The harsh living conditions, abuse, poverty, and death and dying make her question God. However an older woman, a missionary, teaches her that God gives people choices and opportunities and hardships to allow us to demonstrate the quality of our character and our commitment to give to others. The book is hard to put down and holds the reader until the very end.
At nineteen,
Christy
Huddleston left home to teach school in the Smokies--coming to know and care for the wild mountain people, with their fierce pride, terrible poverty, and dark superstitions.
