One of the greatest MacArthur books
The
Gospel
According
To
Jesus
was one of the first MacArthur books that I've read, and definitely one of the bests. I can see why it's considered a classic and was discussed in churches for decades after its release.
As a whole, the book is a great overview on
what
true saving
faith
is. It's beautifully written, academic but not so esoteric that the average reader will not be able to understand its meaning. It uses lots of Bible verses, parables, and Jesus' own experiences to support the argument that true saving faith results in a change of direction that's supernaturally guided by the Holy Spirit. I guess this attacks "easy believism" in the sense that a lack of spiritual fruit may signify that the person is not born again. It's not really the works per se, but more the attitude behind the deeds, in terms of whether the person's heart has been circumsised by repentance or not. I guess that's what it all boils down to when explaining the presence of the Holy Spirit dwelling within the lives of Christians.
As much praise as this book has gotten, it has also been vilified by some as preaching "faith + works" salvation. Just understand that the concept of Lordship Salvation is a widely misunderstood philosophy in the Christian world. The topic definitely walks on a sensitive territory. I don't have a problem with it because I understand what it means. We are justified by faith in Christ alone through repentant faith, and Father God promises to send the Holy Ghost to dwell within us and cause us to produce positive fruits, in whatever capacity. To its not the fruits (good works) themselves that save and we should by no means really on them as our ticket to heaven. It is basically by that conduit of that energy (the Holy Spirit) that we are to cling onto for our admission.
Yet, if one professes faith but whose life is unaltered, or maybe turns out to be even worse than before his "conversion" experience, then we should be suspicious to whether the Holy Spirit is within him, or whether he is saved. It is then that we must lovelingly edify him to the best of our abilities.
In all, I highly recommend this book. I would give it out to every new Christian if I could actually afford such quantity. The message is so very important, so timeless, and necessary. It's really a grand piece of work. The evidence to support the arguments are fantastic.
Just read with caution, so as not to misunderstand the meaning of the book's message regarding faith and works, repentance and faith.

Jesus is God!
When I first read this book 20 years ago I asked a good Christian friend
what
he thought and he would not share his opinion but told me to buy Ryrie's book and then read both together noting the passages used and pick the most biblicaly consistant position which I did as with no ax to grind really thought Macarthur was more biblical. After saying this, I really did not know as an Independent Fundamental Baptist-no one told me I was supposed to hate Bro. Macarthur and by the time someone got around to telling me this it was to late. My impressions are if you love theology you will enjoy this book and less theologically motivated read his other book on this. I say read with an open mind and not what someone else thinks. I am sure if we tried hard enough we could turn Christ into Lucifer with some careful editing.

Saving Faith
This is the most soundly Biblical account of the meaning of Saving
Faith
. Individual denominations have each focused on selected scripture for their evangelistic message, but MacArthur cuts across all denominational lines to reestablish Christ's own criteria for salvation.
What
does
Jesus
mean when he says, 'Follow me'? Twenty years ago, pastor-teacher and bestselling author John MacArthur tackled that seemingly simple question---and wrote a book that has since taken its place among Christianity's classics. This 20th Anniversary edition of MacArthur's provocative book has been revised and contains one new chapter.
