Hot and steamy, but with issues...

Other than The Breeds, this is the only series I continue to read with Lora Leigh.

It's a simple series- a team of Navy Seals and their Happily Ever After love stories. Throw in a bit of suspense, and you got it in a nutshell.

Okay there's lots of steam too!

In KS we get Ian's story. Ian is uber hot and uber alpha! His love interest, Kira (introduced in Hidden Agendas), was a good match for him though.

But I did have issues, which I'll get to later.

Here's the send up:

As we discovered at the end of Hidden Agendas, Ian is the long lost son of drug dealing baddie Diego Fuentes. Because of what Diego and the enigmatic Sorrell did to fellow Seal team member Nathan, Ian decides its time to take his father up on his offer to have Ian take over his business dealings. When I say offer, I mean blackmail. Diego has promised to hunt down every team member until he does so! After what he sees happens to Nathan, Ian decides it's time to end it. He leaves his buddies for the dark side ... supposedly. But he is of course under deep cover to bring his father down. In fact, he means to kill him.

Enter Kira. Known as the Chameleon, the Department Of Homeland Security's master of disguises, she can blend in anywhere- with no one the wiser. Except Ian, he's always been able to spot her. He instinctively knows her, as she does him. Which is why she knows he is not the good guy turned bad he's showing to the world. Thus, she makes her way down to Aruba to help him ... only she has her own mission. Will she be able to accomplish what the DHS has assigned her to do, even if it means betraying the man she loves, or will she stand by his side, once and for all?

I loved this couple. They oozed sexy, repressed chemistry and I loved seeing them hook up. Unfortunately, it got sorta old by 2/3's in, because they were hooking up every other page. I like alotta sex in my books as much as the next gal- that's my candy reads- but at some point it just gets old.

The other issue I had, was the fact I didn't buy much of the characters' motivations. Oh I got Kira, and even Ian to an extent, but Diego's was a tough sell for me. The big bad of the previous books, I didn't buy his wanting his son's love so much it showed in every hurt look that came into his eye's when Ian supposedly rejected it. And another thing, why would such a big bad drug lord hand over the reigns to a son who wasn't even trying to hide his contempt? ::shrug:: Just didn't seem believable to me. LL should've had Ian internalize some of that, imo.

(oh and their were tons of typos in this one. Where are the editors?)

Lovin' Me Some SEALs

Ian Richards - a good man produced by bad blood - has betrayed his Navy SEAL brother-in-arms and has become a traitor to his country. As the son of the infamous drug lord, Diego Fuentes, Ian has stepped forward to claim his birthright as the heir to the Fuentes Cartel. Although, unbeknowst to the Durango Team- his SEAL brothers, and his father, Ian has tipped the first of a house of cards. The plan is to kill Sorrel - a U.S. terrorist threat, and in the process, murder his father thereby toppling the Fuentes Drug Cartel into the dust.

Being immersed in the cartel for a year, Ian's soul has become weary. Blood he has shed coats his hands and his heart. He tries to justify these deaths by reminding himself that the men were murders, drug dealers, rapists - monsters. Yet still, his soul weeps while his identity as Ian Richards slowly disappears into that of Ian Fuentes.

Kira Porter is leading a double life. One as the wealthy society princess and the other as The Chameleon. Kira is a covert operative agent working for the Department of Homeland Security. She can morph herself into being completely unrecognizable, even to those who know her well. In her several disguises, she infiltrates terrorist cells and reports back to handlers so that the Navy SEALs can move in and take down the threat she has captured.

Kira has developed so many disguises, so many personalities and lives that she doesn't know her true self. She feels incredibly isolated and lonely in her ever changing persona. That is until she meets Ian. The two have crossed paths several times. Her operating as The Chameleon, and Ian as part of the silent and deadly force of the Navy SEALs. Each time, no matter how different she makes her appearance, Ian can recognize her. With an almost imperceptible lift of a chin, or direct hard stare, Ian acknowledges Kira in the field, letting her know that he sees her. This fascinates Kira to the extent that she researches Ian endlessly. She takes contracts where she knows that the Durango Team, and thus Ian, will be involved just so that she may see him again. Kira also gets the feeling that Ian is just as fascinated with her as she with him.

Deep down, Kira knows that Ian is not a deserter of his country nor a traitor. Because of this she will shed her disguise and ultimately her protection as The Chameleon, to go to Ian and offer herself - Kira Porter - to Ian Fuentes. She will protect him at all costs. And when she discovers that Ian is there to kill his father, Diego Fuentes, she will never let him achieve this goal. Not only has the Department of Homeland Security contracted her to keep Diego Fuentes alive, but she cannot allow Ian to completely destroy his soul. No man should ever have to wield the weapon that kills his father.

Ian and Kira are explosive together. Ian, with his soul seeped in blood and guilt, finds light and love in Kira's strength and determination to make him feel complete. Meanwhile, he forces Kira to be the woman while in his arms and not the agent thus revealing to Kira her passionate nature and her desire to love Ian and be loved in return.

As with all Lora Leigh novels, Ian and Kira discover themselves and their feelings for each other through very graphic and erotic love scenes. What I love about Leigh is that her sex scenes are never redundant. Each one breaks through emotional barriers that the characters have erected and developed over time. In each scene the characters are tested more and more until their previous illusions and walls come crumbling down with a shattering release and the hero and heroine can finally express their love for one another.

In addition, Leigh has created a very interesting and sympathetic villain. Diego Fuentes is an evil madman yet all he truly wants is the love of his son and the chance to maybe one day hold his grandchildren. The reader understands Diego's plight because it's so natural for one to want children and their love. Yet, Diego also exhibits his ability to kill with stunning remorselessness and ease. This combination is quite compelling and adds to Ian's growing anguish and frustration with his resolve to kill his father.

Lora Leigh gets better with each novel she writes and 'Killer Secrets' is definitely following this trend. Her plot lines have become more complex while her characters have gained emotional depth and range. She is an auto-buy for me and will continue to be so after this great read.

The only aspect that brings down my assigned grade is that this novel, although can be stand alone, I feel is confusing without having read the previous titles in her Tempting SEALs series. To better understand Ian and Diego Fuentes, I recommend starting from the beginning with 'Dangerous Games' and 'Hidden Agendas'.

Kira and Ian

Ian is the illegitimate son of Diego Fuentes, a drug cartel. Ian appears to be running his fathers business, after leaving duty with the NAVY SEALs and nobody really knows what he going to do next. Is he trying to bring his fathers business down? Or is he going to turn into the very people he fought against as a SEAL? Agent Kira Porter is absolutely certain he is trying to stop the Fuentes cartel, and believes she can see right through his bad boy persona. As an undercover agent for the Department of Homeland Security Kira is able to shadow Ian on his journey and at times finds herself questioning his loyalty. The only thing absolutely set in stone in this story is their attraction to each other is a ticking bomb and when it explodes they may never be the same. Will Ian turn on his own father to stop the cartel madness? Or will these killer secrets be kept at all costs?

***As a huge fan of Lora Leigh's breed series this book was a pleasant surprise. Ian and Kira make great erotic chemistry. I highly recommend this book and I will be checking out more from Lora Leigh's TEMPTING SEALs series.
