Not bad, Not Great

What would happen if Heinlein wrote a sequal to Starship Troopers? I think it might have been this book.

A solid follow-up to Orphanage, the evolution of the treat from the slugs seems logical and natural. Buettner continues to write solidly, with the story maintaining a good pace with just enough action keep you riveted but not so much to make you burn out. He does good character development, both with existing characters and brand new ones. Even the robot manages a good but not over the top personality. The dialog remains decent and fairly believable, with a limit to unwieldy exposition speeches.

The one real problem with this book is it gets almost whinny at parts. The main character has a bad case of feeling bad for himself, and seems to pout from time to time. Also, his superiors seem particularly incompetent, and instead of working around them, the main character just sulks. This is a little bit of a problem. The author is clearly a "glass is half empty" kind of person.

A good continuation to the series, its tone keeps this book from being great, but still worth the read.

Orphan's Journey a fun read and a great ride!

I just finished Orphan's Journey and I am very excited about the next book in this series. Mr. Buttner has created a great universe, wonderful characters and packed the story with action and drama. If you like Military Sci-Fi this work is for you.

Terrific Summertime reading!

After having read the first book in this series, Orphanage, I was hooked. I just finished this one and it was just as good. The very first couple of chapters are a little disorienting, but it all gels together soon enough. Fast paced through the middle and end with a crackerjack ending. I'm starting the third book now.

Wonderous and very world like

After a few years in the army it was nice to see the side of it that comes from that of a fellow literist. I enjoyed every minute, and i'm sure i definantly would have enjoyed it just as much if i were a civilian.

Solid Sequel, Less Action but Good Military Sci-Fi

"Orphan's Destiny" picks up immediately following the events of the series's first book, Orphanage (Jason Wander). We find newly field promoted General Wanderer trying keep the few remaining heroes from the "Battle of Ganymede" alive. Since the travel time involved, using human technology, takes so long for interplanetary flight, many years have passed before Jason and his troops return home...and the home he returned to is a very different place than what it was when he left (both socially and politically). Where does this new environment leave the new General and his veterans? Robert Buettner does a very good job spinning this tale and adds the same humor found in the first book...mostly at the expense of Jason Wander caught like a deer in the headlights!

Highly recommended sequel! I am already reading the next book, Orphan's Journey (Jason Wander).
