Misleading title full of clichés and obvious advices

"The Biology of Success. Feel Great, Focus your energy, Master the power of positive thought, Maximize your potential for success". Absolutely misleading, I bought the book, and I can tell that you probably won't learn anything new from it. The topics Dr. Robert Arnot addresses are covered more thoroughly and helpfully in other books.

As an example, here are some of the obvious advices and observations the author gives you, as words of wisdoms:

- Bright light makes you more alert, but dim light would induce drowsiness.
- Cold and dry air, especially in the face, makes you more alert, while hot wet ambient conditions induce drowsiness.
- Music affects your mood.
- If you can't say something good, don't say anything at all.

Save your money, and invest it in other book. After I bought the book I found only 10 of the almost 400 pages of this book to be really worthy; the tables on the glycemic index of some carbohydrates, and the Protein and Fatty Acids tables, but even this information could be found in other books.

Better than I expected it to be...

I never write reviews on the books that I read, but after I read this book, and especially after I read some of the negative reviews that it got, I was compelled to defend some of its points. First of all, if most or all of what Dr. Arnot claims in his book to be true, is just "common sense", then why doesn't everyone automatically do these simple things to improve their lives? We live in a society where almost 30% of our population is obese, antidepressants are overprescribed and all of our children seem to have ADD. We ignore and take for granted the simple pleasures available to us, like putting on some Beethoven and a little aroma therapy to relax. Regulating our sleep patterns in order to be at the top of our game may be common sense, but how many of us don't get the recommended 8-10 hours each night?

I realized, like other readers, that this book was very simple and sometimes made you say, "well duh." But I believe the purpose of this book was to emphasize and bring to light those so-called simple things, and help us realize that these subtle changes are all we need in order to make positive things happen in our lives. I really appreciated the sections on exercise for improving the quality of life and as a personal trainer, believe that when your health and fitness become your first priority, then everything else just falls into place.

I can honestly say that I got more out of this book than I had hoped for, and am very pleased. This is definitely a book that you can come back to and refresh your memory on those "simple things" that we seem to forget. Check it out at your local library, or get it from amazon- but if you are in need of organizing your life- just read it. I promise even the most cynical person will get something positive out of it- just make sure to apply it to your life daily otherwise the information will be useless. Thanks for reading!

"Wonderful--inspiring and very readable"

As I read this book I thought to myself, how wonderful to read a book, authored by an M.D., which is actually written in English (as opposed to doctorish). This book is written in such a way that anyone can read it. Most of the information is basic information, but the picture the author portrays seems like a medical marvel. There are so many ways that we can improve our lives, and move closer to success, that Dr. Arnot barely scratches the surface. The chapters on exercize and moving beyond our comfort zones motivated me the most. Dr. Arnot abolished the age old myth that we should not over-train, but rather push ourselves to new levels if we want to improve. That is something I have long agreed with. This book is not chock-full of new information, if that is what you are looking for. Rather, this book is one of many of the well written volumes of success available. I highly recommend it.

Helped my study and writing habits

I found most of the advice pretty good. Dr. Arnot covers the external factors such as light, food, exercise and sleep to improve your performance. By increasing the light in my office, getting a more ergonomic chair, taking more breaks, sticking to low-glycemic foods and staying active, my writing performance improved by at least 25%. While Arnot's advice involves some lifestyle changes, I found that most of the concepts were simple to follow.

Our experience and common sense may tell us that people who are upbeat and energetic stand a better chance of getting ahead, and now recent scientific research on the brain reveals precisely why this is so. In this bestselling book, now in paperback, Dr. Bob Arnot distills the lessons to be drawn from these findings. He outlines a step-by-step program that enables readers to change undesirable habits and behavior, to create optimal conditions for succeeding, and, ultimately, to achieve their personal best. The program covers everything from diet to exercise, including: what to eat to fuel your brain (and when to eat it), the importance of recreation and physical rest, how to determine the right exercise (and the appropriate amount of exercise), how making simple changes in your immediate surroundings can improve your mood, and tricks for better focusing your energy Filled with inspiring examples from the lives of successful people, The Biology of Success offers the perfect antidote to the stress-filled lives so many of us lead today.
