The straight dope.

I highly recommend this book. During my pregnancy, nothing seemed to go the way all of the more traditional books seemed to say it should. From the Hips, however, gives so many different "real-world" perspectives from so many different pregnant women that I began to feel normal and safe--even with all of my pregnancy's particular quirks! There's plenty of medical information, too, of course, so you're not missing out on that. Even better, unlike with the other "written by a doctor" books that I've read, From the Hips provides the actual sources whence the medical info came. Best of all about this book is the writing style. You feel like you're chatting among articulate, literate friends rather than reading a dry or boring text on a subject that can be very personal.

Comprehensive and informative

This book reads really well and has a TON of information in it, don't expect to read it in one day! It contains a lot of different subjects, and I found that the book grew with me. At first I found the parts on pregnancy enjoyable but wasn't too interested in the last half of the book about your body after birth, taking care and adjusting to having a newborn. Now that I'm in my third trimester it's a lot more interesting for me and I've almost read this book cover to cover. And yes, not everything in this book is pretty, but if you think pregnancy is all happy times then you'll likely be disappointed in coming months.

Good but not great pregnancy book

I bought this book after reading a review in a pregnancy magazine I'd picked up at a visit to the doctor's office. Although it's a good read, it's a lot bulkier than I expected, and I don't think I ever finished reading the whole thing. The format is alright -- takes you through different stages of pregnancy, delivery, life with a newborn, etc. I also liked that it had a lot of quotes from real people about their experiences. What I didn't love is that I was expecting it to be a bit funnier (since that's how the review made it seem) and a little cooler than it was. It was really not a whole lot different from a regular "What to Expect" book, except that it had a cooler look to it. Hot pink everywhere. Again, I thought it was decent, but I didn't think it had a novel approach to pregnancy, childbirth, or life with a newborn. It was a jazzed up "what to expect" with a slightly different format. And did I mention it was heavy?? Really not an easy book to tote to the park for a lite read.

The ultimate "get real" guide!

I have no shortage of pregnancy books (my husband started my library by ordering the Mayo Clinic guide), but this is the only one that was compelling enough to read cover to cover! What I like most about it is the non-judgmental, thoroughly researched, yet chatty and "get real" tone.

The guiding principle here seems to be, "there is no right way." There's what's right for YOU and YOUR BABY.

I could have spent months ordering books by the various gurus of pregnancy and parenting (yes, they cover the post-pregnancy stuff too!), to contrast and compare the endless studies and opinions, but the authors have done my work for me. Consider this the buyer's guide to the barrage of information. They've heard it all, tried a lot of it, and the myriad anecdotes from "anonymoms" (and daddys too) fill in any gaps.

Extensive references let you know where to find in-depth information on any particular subject. "From the Hips" will tell both sides of the story, but they can't go totally into depth - once you decide what's appealing, you can find out more.

Just as valuable is the perspective it provides on being pregnant/parent. The positive and the negative get equal face-time. Chances are, you'll find some sentiments or stories that echo yours, and get some validation. You are not the first person to feel this way, but it can seem that way sometimes.

I am 7 months in, and I feel a lot more secure about what's ahead, because I know what I'm in for, and I know where to look when the problems come!
