the heretic queen, a novel
It is a fun
novel
based on facts that could be found on this particular character in history. The author keeps the pages turning, while giving insight into characters and the time. I have to say there where many things I did not know about the Egyptian culture that was brought to life in this book.
Exceptional
I cannot wait for Cleopatra's Daughter. Not only is Ms. Moran a talented writer, she is also kind too, answering all of my emails to her regarding questions I had about women in ancient Egypt. When I read Nefertiti, I was biting my nails about what Moran would write next. I didn't think it could live up to her first book, but The
Heretic
Queen
does that and more. This is why I really can't wait for book three. I know Cleopatra's Daughter isn't going to be a sequel, but I don't care. I enjoy how accessible Michelle Moran's writing is. There's nothing pretentious or overdone about it. It's simple, evocative, and very enjoyable. I also like that I can pass these books on to my daughter, who is fourteen. I hope Michelle keeps writing, because once I find an author whose style I like I'll stay with them forever.

Better than "Nefertiti"
In my review for "Nefertiti", I stated that it wasn't what I expected (but I still wasn't disappointed). What I didn't get from "Nefertiti" I got from "The
Heretic
Queen
", which I think is the better of the two. Unlike it's predecessor, this book is narrated by the title character, who is also the heroine. She (the heroine, Nefertari) is much more likable and easier to relate to than Nefertiti. The story is very engaging and flows well from the previous one. Personally, I liked the ending of this story better, as it is "happier". "Nefertiti" left me a little bit deflated. "The Heretic Queen" is more romantic and uplifting in my view, as well as quite sensual in some parts, and tastefully so. Again, it is an excellent read for anyone who loves historical fiction, particularly ancient Egypt.

A great novel about ancient Egypt
If you're fascinated, like I am, by the rituals, makeup, daily life and worship of the ancient Egyptians, then do yourself a favor and pick this book up. It's a tale of adventure, greed, ambition, but most of all, love, and through it all you come face to face with Egyptian culture and life. I didn't want the
novel
to end, and when it did, I went immediately to Amazon to see when Moran's next book is coming out. I wish she had a dozen more Egyptian novels. I can think of a bunch of subjects she could write on next, like Hatshepsut, Tiye, or Ankhesenamun. This was a really enjoyable book, and I know for certain I'll be buying her next one.

Recommended to anyone interested in historical novels
The
Heretic
Queen
is a fictionalized historical
novel
about the young princess Nefertari, and her struggles in the court of Ramesses II to become his queen and Chief Wife. The struggle for power is always at the heart of political intrigue, and so, it is at the heart of this tale.
Michelle Moran has researched and written a most entertaining and informative novel about ancient Egypt. There's romance, religion, warfare, and palace intrigue. The novel is well written with an educated style. I enjoyed reading it and can recommend it to anyone interested in historical novels.

In ancient Egypt, a forgotten princess must overcome her family?s past and remake history.
The winds of change are blowing through Thebes. A devastating palace fire has killed the Eighteenth Dynasty?s royal family?all with the exception of Nefertari, the niece of the reviled former
queen
, Nefertiti. The girl?s deceased family has been branded as
heretic
al, and no one in Egypt will speak their names. A relic of a previous reign, Nefertari is pushed aside, an unimportant princess left to run wild in the palace. But this changes when she is taken under the wing of the Pharaoh?s aunt, then brought to the Temple of Hathor, where she is educated in a manner befitting a future queen.
Soon Nefertari catches the eye of the Crown Prince, and despite her family?s history, they fall in love and wish to marry. Yet all of Egypt opposes this union between the rising star of a new dynasty and the fading star of an old, heretical one. While political adversity sets the country on edge, Nefertari becomes the wife of Ramesses the Great. Destined to be the most powerful Pharaoh in Egypt, he is also the man who must confront the most famous exodus in history.
Sweeping in scope and meticulous in detail, The Heretic Queen is a
novel
of passion and power, heartbreak and redemption.
