user friendly

This book was excellent: highly educational. The program seems user friendly, achievable and long-term. Part of the program includes avoiding white bread and rice later on, however, depending on your personal needs, it may not be totally necessary. (don't think I could give up french bread for the rest of my days).

Makes sense but....

I guess Desmaisons theory is correct but her suggestions didn't really work for me. I do understand that sugar is detrimental to our health but how to go about eliminating it from your diet can be a struggle. I suggest Kat James 'The Truth About Beauty' or Roberts "The Shangria-La Diet" for help on loosing weight and cutting sugar.

Eye opener

This book was eye opening and it seems as if it was written for me! I've been off sugar for a month now and I never thought it was possible.

Excellent companion to Potatoes Not Prozac

Whenever we embark on a trip to a faraway land, it is always useful to hear what worked and did not work from others who have already been there and done that.

The Sugar Addicts Total Recovery Program is packed full of what works and what does not work on the journey to radiant recovery from sugar and/or alcohol addiction. Both Dr DesMaison and many other people from all around the world share their practical insights.

I have found the down to earth wisdom in this book invaluable on my journey to feeling great about myself and my life.

Thanks to Dr DesMaison and all the other people who made this book a reality.

Did not follow most guidelines, but still helped

I was very enthusiastic about this book upon first reading it that it would solve a lot of my sugar+fatty food obsession (ice cream is my ultimate downfall). It helped me understand what was going on chemically that caused the crazy eating behavior that I engaged in. I started with the first step, which was easy. I tried the second step, then the third. I had a very hard time keeping a food journal. I did it for 3 weeks, and once I fell behind, I couldn't get motivated to keep at it again. But what has become a revelation as of late is that my eating habits have changed just by doing the first step, which is to get an adequate amount of protein at breakfast, which I wasn't doing before, even though my breakfasts tend to be very healthy. I now notice that when I do engage in some not-so-healthy eating of sugary fatty foods, that it'll only last a day of two, instead of a week or two or more. So for this reason, I recommend the book. And also for the reason of understanding the brain chemistry that goes with eating, for that knowledge in itself is helpful to not engaging in unhealthy eating. I am not interested in cutting out sugar completely from my life, for I don't think my sugar addiction is serious, and I'm generally healthy and at a normal weight range and physical fitness level. Also, I'm not interested in following this program 100% because when I tend to concentrate too much on food, that is when I notice my food obsession starts to take over too much of my life, when my goal is not to make food so important to me.

Kathleen DesMaisons started a diet revolution with her runaway bestseller, Potatoes Not Prozac, a startling new health and nutrition program for people who are sugar sensitive. The response was phenomenal: 170,000 copies sold and more than 5 million hits on her Web site over the past two years. Now, in this new book, The Sugar Addict's Total Recovery Program, which is based on a careful balance of protein and carbohydrates, Dr. DesMaisons provides detailed, workable, meal-by-meal instructions on how to implement her breakthrough food plan and make it a part of your daily life.

Sugar-sensitive individuals require not only a different diet but a different approach to diet--and that's exactly what Dr. DesMaisons offers here. Writing with the deep understanding and personal experience that comes from being both a clinician and a recovering sugar addict herself, and informed with all the latest scientific research on what makes a person sugar sensitive, Dr. DesMaisons explains exactly how you can free your mind and body from the tyranny of sugar and shake off the exhaustion, mental fogginess, and mood swings that sugar dependence causes. Revealing the various ways sugar addiction affects both men and women, and the unique methods for healing it, Dr. DesMaisons encourages you to custom-tailor her simple program to fit your lifestyle, and includes information on:

- How to fully integrate a "slow-carbs not low-carbs" strategy into your diet
- How to shop efficiently and economically for staples, treats, and emergency foods
- Why regular protein is essential and how to get it with every meal
- What to eat when a sugar craving strikes
- How to get the nutrition you need on the run--even at fast-food restaurants
- How to find an exercise program you'll enjoy
- 10 breakfasts you can prepare in a flash
- Menus and recipes for every lifestyle and taste

Practical, hands-on, and reader friendly, The Sugar Addict's Total Recovery Program gives you the guidance you need for every phase of healing your sugar sensitivity, from chaos to stability to lasting recovery. By finding and sticking with the protein/carbohydrate balance that's right for you, not only will you look and feel better, but you'll actually resolve the problems that have made you lose control of your eating. This book will transform your life by helping you eat right--starting today!
