the long awaited vol. 8!

PWN! first review, anyway, Tusbasa (FYI it means wings in jp) is a wonderful tie up series from CLAMP (i say this, because they take just about every series they've wirtten and added it in to this series) and another great volume only made it better. So for this book, the gang winds up on a strangly hot planet with homicidal rabbits, and they end up kidnapping Syaoran and trying to cook him. Long story short the rabbits happened to have one of Sakura's feathers all along, and they give it to her, and they go on there merry way. Next they come to world with a bitter feud between a Jinja (basicaly a shrine that houses travelers and the poor) and a traveling circus. The gang gets split up, Kuro-pip and Fai at the Jinja, and Sakura and Syaoran and Mokona at the circus. I'd hate to spoile the rest for you, i leave you with this: Syaoran has to dress as a girl for a while. Enjoi

Good but not as good as can be.

Crossover Info: Events in Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles #8 crossover with events happening in xxxHolic #5 with the gang finally reading the letter Yuko sent them in the last volume. Mokona also communicates with the black Mokona over in xxxHolic though Saoran and Sakura simply think he's talking in his sleep.

After the emotion packed world of Oto, in the last few volumes, it's good to see that the first world the gang travel to feaures a rather back-to-basics "get the feather" kind of adventure with lots of cute furry creatures in a rainforest and a monster that's recently become super powerful. Hmmm... I wonder where the feather could be? ;)

Something I noticed when I was reading this volume is that the two page spread where they enter the world of Idols (with the furry creatures) looks very similar to how the gang entered the new world in the Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle Movie. I wouldn't be suprised if the animation director used the manga as a reference. It looks that similar.

Anyway, after the Land of Idols, they reach the Land of Sharano which is where the next multi volume major arc begins.

While not as cool or epic as the last few volumes, this new one seems to feature a lot of growth where characters are concerned with Saoran starting to regain some memories of his own, Sakura regaining some useful memories for a change, Fai giving some more hints about his past, and it becoming more obvious that they are being watched by someone else. There are also some laughs with Saoran having to dress up as a woman and those furry little creatures who has me laughing out loud at one point.

Not exactly a 5 star issue, but it wasn't bad either. 4 stars from me.

Back to basics

This volume of Tsubasa contains two very different but good story arcs.

First up is a light yet somehow disturbing mini-arc in which the gang encounters a village of giant singing and dancing bunnies (yes, really) who claim they need to burn a sacrifice to protect them from a destructive entity. The gang kindly offers to investigate and solve the problem, but the bunnies refuse to let them leave without a hostage in case they still have to go through with the sacrifice. Fai volunteers to stay behind as Mokona is needed for the others to communicate with eachother and leaving Sakura alone is of course not an option. Will Dad and the kids save the day, or will Mommy become Sorceror kebob? Generally a nice little hilarious diversion that makes you wonder what CLAMP was smoking at the time (in a good way), but it also shows that Sakura is no shrinking violet as she starts to come into her own and actively participate in the quest for her feathers.

More serious is the second half of the volume, which is obviously the beginning of a longer arc. Something goes wrong with the gang's jump, and Kurogane and Fai are separated from Mokona and the panicked kids. Although anxious without their guardians, the kids have what seems to be a stroke of luck in the form of a kindly all-female performing troupe which takes them in. That is, until strange things start happening with a statue of their household god...

A god named Ashura...

Ending on a cliffhanger, this volume maintains the overall high quality of what has come before.

Another excellent volume of Tsubasa.

In volume eight of the Tsubasa manga, Syaoran, Sakura, Fai, Kurogane, and Mokona first travel to a strange jungle world inhabited by furry creatures being terrorized by a mysterious monster. The furry creatures claim the beast demands a sacrifice -- and if the companions cannot placate the monster, one of them will be that sacrifice!! The friends are able to figure out what the mysterious monster really is and reclaim the feather that is hidden in that world, but the encounter leaves them with an uneasy feeling. They then travel on to the main world of the new story arc that begins with this volume, the country of Shara, where Sakura, Syaoran, and Mokona end up in an all-female circus, and Kurogane and Fai at a temple that is home to a band of warriors. This was another great volume in this manga, with lots of sweet, funny, and exciting moments in it, as always, and it starts off an interesting now story arc. Fans of Tsubasa will not want to miss it.
